The University invites applications from suitably qualified and experienced individuals for the position of Associate Professor – Pharmacy. The successful candidate will demonstrate outstanding academic leadership, excellence in pharmaceutical education, research, postgraduate supervision, clinical pharmacy practice, innovation and community engagement while contributing to the University's vision of producing competent, ethical and globally competitive pharmacists.

Responsibilities or duties

• Provide academic and professional leadership in pharmacy education, research, pharmaceutical practice and innovation.
• Lead the delivery of high-quality undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacy programmes.
• Promote excellence in pharmaceutical research, scholarly publication, postgraduate supervision and evidence-based pharmacy practice.
• Mentor academic staff, postgraduate students and early-career researchers.
• Support curriculum development, quality assurance, accreditation and institutional strategic initiatives.
• Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the Head of Department, Dean or University Management.
• Deliver high-quality lectures, tutorials, laboratory practicals, simulation-based learning and clinical pharmacy instruction for undergraduate and postgraduate students.
• Lead curriculum design, review and implementation to ensure pharmacy programmes meet national, regional and international accreditation standards.
• Coordinate and supervise students during clinical placements, industrial attachments and experiential learning in hospitals, pharmaceutical industries, community pharmacies and regulatory agencies.
• Develop and moderate examinations, laboratory assessments, Objective Structured Practical Examinations (OSPEs) and other evaluation methods.
• Supervise undergraduate research projects, Master's dissertations and doctoral research where applicable.
• Conduct independent and collaborative research in pharmaceutical sciences, clinical pharmacy, pharmacology, pharmaceutics, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmacognosy, pharmacoeconomics and related disciplines.
• Publish scholarly work in reputable peer-reviewed journals and contribute to books, book chapters and conference proceedings.
• Lead or participate in funded research projects, consultancies and collaborative pharmaceutical initiatives.
• Mentor junior academic staff and postgraduate students in teaching, research, publication, grant writing and professional development.
• Lead curriculum review, programme accreditation and quality assurance activities within the Department and School.
• Promote innovative teaching methodologies, simulation-based education and digital technologies in pharmacy education.
• Secure research funding through competitive grant applications and collaborative partnerships.
• Establish partnerships with hospitals, the National Drug Authority, National Medical Stores, pharmaceutical manufacturers, research institutions, government agencies and international academic institutions.
• Participate in departmental, School and University committees and contribute to institutional governance.
• Provide pharmaceutical consultancy, continuing professional development programmes, medicines information services and expert advisory services.
• Lead community outreach programmes focusing on rational medicine use, antimicrobial stewardship, medication safety, pharmacovigilance and public health initiatives.
• Uphold professional ethics, academic integrity and the standards of the pharmacy profession.
• Prepare academic, research and administrative reports.
• Perform any other duties assigned by University Management.

Qualifications or requirements

• Hold an earned PhD or equivalent academic doctorate in Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Sciences or a relevant pharmacy discipline from a recognised university.
• Demonstrate excellence in university teaching, pharmacy practice, research and postgraduate supervision.
• Possess a distinguished record of scholarly publication, academic leadership and curriculum development.
• An earned PhD or equivalent academic doctorate in Pharmacy, Pharmaceutical Sciences or a related discipline.
• Bachelor of Pharmacy (BPharm), Doctor of Pharmacy (PharmD) or an equivalent recognised professional qualification.
• Registration and a valid practising licence with the Pharmacy Council of Uganda or an equivalent recognised professional regulatory authority.
• Demonstrated excellence in undergraduate and postgraduate pharmacy education.
• A demonstrated record of at least five (5) peer-reviewed publications in reputable journals indexed in Scopus, Web of Science or equivalent databases.
• Successfully supervised at least two (2) postgraduate students to completion, including Master's students and preferably doctoral candidates.

Experience needed

• A minimum of five (5) years of progressive university teaching, research and professional pharmacy practice, with substantial experience at the rank of Senior Lecturer or its equivalent.

The purpose of the job is to provide academic leadership in pharmacy education, research, professional practice and community engagement; strengthen postgraduate education and supervision; promote innovation and evidence-based pharmaceutical care; enhance institutional research capacity; and contribute to improving healthcare outcomes through teaching, research and professional service
