UGA Livestock Officer 

Location: Nakivale/ Kyangwali

 

Purpose of the Role. 

The Livestock Officer will lead technical support for climate-smart livestock value chains, including smallholder poultry, piggery, small ruminants, and aquaculture, where relevant, as well as feed formulation, animal housing, husbandry, disease prevention, and livestock-based livelihood resilience.

Key Responsibilities. 

  • Lead design and implementation of all livestock-related interventions on the project
  • Provide technical guidance on livestock enterprise selection, husbandry, breed suitability, housing, feeding, disease prevention, and biosecurity.
  • Train farmer groups, youth, field teams, CBFs, and lead farmers on climate-resilient livestock production.
  • Support planning and monitoring of livestock input distribution, including starter stock, feed materials, equipment, or related inputs where applicable.
  • Support the establishment of livestock demonstration sites and practical learning activities.
  • Promote integration of livestock with crop production, composting, manure management, and household nutrition.
  • Work with district veterinary teams and relevant government structures for technical supervision and disease surveillance.
  • Contribute to market linkage and enterprise development for livestock products.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience.

  • Degree in Veterinary Medicine, Animal Production, Animal Science, Livestock Production, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of practical experience in livestock programming, animal health, agricultural livelihoods, or refugee/host community programming.
  • Experience supporting smallholder poultry, piggery, goats, aquaculture, or mixed farming systems.
  • Knowledge of animal health regulations, biosecurity, disease prevention, and livestock extension.
  • Experience working with district veterinary structures is an added advantage.

  • Input utilization and enterprise performance reports.
