The Entomologist (Contingent upon confirmation of funding)

Location: Nakivale/ Kyangwali

Purpose of the Role:

The Entomologist will provide technical leadership for beneficial insect value chains such as apiculture, black soldier fly production, and other context-appropriate insect-based enterprises that support income generation, nutrition, waste management, soil fertility, and circular-economy approaches.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead technical design and implementation of beneficial insect enterprises.
  • Identify suitable beneficial insect value chains for refugee and host community contexts.
  • Train farmer groups, youth, field teams, CBFs, and lead farmers on apiculture, black soldier fly rearing, hive management, insect-based feed production, safety, harvesting, processing, and marketing.
  • Support establishment of demonstration units for apiculture or black soldier fly production.
  • Promote linkages between beneficial insect enterprises, crop production, livestock feed, organic fertilizer, and waste management.
  • Provide technical guidance on equipment, starter kits, quality control, processing, packaging, and market access.
  • Support monitoring of enterprise performance, production levels, income potential, and adoption rates.
  • Document lessons and business models for scaling.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience:

  • Degree in Agriculture, Entomology, Animal Science, Apiculture, Agribusiness, Environmental Science, or a related field.
  • At least 5 years of experience in apiculture, black soldier fly production, insect-based enterprises, or related agricultural value chains.
  • Demonstrated experience training smallholder farmers, youth, or community groups.
  • Practical knowledge of low-cost enterprise models suitable for vulnerable households.
  • Experience in refugee settlements or rural community development is an added advantage.
