The Sustainable Land Management (SLM) Officer
Location(s): Nakivale/ Kyangwali
Purpose of the Role
The Sustainable Land Management Officer will lead technical implementation of land restoration, soil and water conservation, agroforestry, land-use planning, watershed protection, and climate-smart land management interventions in refugee settlements and host communities.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead the design and implementation of Sustainable Land Management interventions.
- Support identification and mapping of land areas to be placed under SLM and climate-smart production practices.
- Provide technical guidance on soil and water conservation, contour bunds, mulching, composting, integrated soil fertility management, agroforestry, rainwater harvesting, and erosion control.
- Support block farming models and land access/use arrangements in collaboration with OPM, District Local Governments, host community leaders, and farmer groups.
- Train field teams, CBFs, lead farmers, and farmer groups on SLM practices.
- Support tree planting, woodlot establishment, fruit orchards, landscape restoration, and community action planning.
- Ensure alignment of land-use interventions with environmental safeguards and climate change priorities.
- Monitor hectares under SLM, tree survival, soil conservation structures, and adoption of SLM practices.
Minimum Qualifications and Experience
- Degree in Natural Resource Management, Environmental Science, Agroforestry, Soil and Water Conservation, Agriculture, Climate Change, or related field.
- At least 5 years of experience in SLM, natural resource management, land restoration, agroforestry, or climate resilience programming.
- Experience working in refugee-hosting districts or fragile natural resource contexts.
- Strong knowledge of participatory land-use planning, land access facilitation, and climate adaptation.
- Experience with public works, watershed management, or landscape restoration is an added advantage.
