Job Purpose

UTCL is seeking a fresh graduate forester to join our team to assist in tree nursery management, forest management, occupational health and safety, financial planning, personnel training, wood management, labour management. The successful candidate will play a critical role in ensuring efficiency while maintaining the highest standards of safety.

Company background

Uganda Tea Corporation has been a leading tea producer and exporter in Uganda for the last 20 years. It has three estates with its headquarters at Kasaku near Lugazi. Kasaku is about 48km from Kampala and 40km from Jinja.

Job Identification

  • Duty station: Kasaku, Salama, Luwala Estates

  • Reporting to: Estate Manager

Job specification

  • Set up tree nurseries at the estate, including coffee, eucalyptus, cocoa, and other commercial trees.
  • Ensure a higher seed germination rate in the nursery before transplanting.
  • Planning with fellow field staff about operations on company-designated lands, including forest harvest plans, planting trees, and gap filling.
  • Manage silvicultural operations and intercropping practices as guided by company policy, applicable laws, regulations, and statutes.
  • Conduct tree census and forest cover mapping using tools such as GPS, etc.
  • Direct preparation of sites on which trees will be planted.
  • Minimize the impact of silvicultural practices on the environment.
  • Ensure proper use of personal protective equipment(PPE) during working hours for the safety of employees.
  • Develop and monitor the execution of financial plans for the department, including reviewing the long-term forest management plans and annual action plans.
  • Coach, develop, mentor, and recruit a second line of forestry supervisors in the field.
  • Make monthly reports on firewood harvest and submit to your supervisor.
  • Supervise forest, logging workers, and technicians.

Candidate specification

Educational requirements: At least a diploma in Forestry

Work experience: No work experience is required.

Required skills

Strong communication skills,ability to work independently as part of a team, should have a fair

command of the English language, interpersonal skills, public relations skills, and leadership skills.
