Women In Technology Uganda (WITU), grounded in Gender Equality and empowerment of women is committed to making its contribution to narrowing the gender technological gap and economic growth for women youth in Africa, through both digital and entrepreneurial skills development and Innovation by unlocking opportunities for women youth through quality skills training and mentorship.

Under its Digital Job Center flagship initiative of the Digital Economy Program, WITU aims to empower young women with the knowledge and tools necessary to thrive in the digital economy focusing on high-demand digital skills such as basic ICT, graphic design, and digital marketing, including social media management, data analytics, digital marketing, software development, and more. The goal is to bridge the gap between education and employment by preparing young women to meet dynamic industry tech needs and connecting them with Potential employers. The program addresses the gap for qualified female digital professionals while simultaneously tackling the digital gender gap by providing targeted training and career support to women aged 18-35 years.

WITU has expanded her reach of the Digital Job Center program, allowing more young women to receive high-quality digital training to increase their employability within the digital space. This partnership enables WITU to deliver even more value to employers by providing a more diverse and skilled talent pool.

Within the framework of dignified and fulfilling lives, WITU intends to build the capacities of its participants to ably seize any employment opportunities at their disposal during and after the skilling program. By providing mentorship and job readiness skills to its participants, in addition to digital skilling. WITU therefore seeks a safeguarding officer to address knowledge gaps and provide mentorship and job readiness skills to its Participants. The Safeguarding Officer is responsible for ensuring the organization prevents, identifies, and responds appropriately to safeguarding risks, including abuse, exploitation, harassment, and neglect. They will also ensure that safeguarding policies are implemented effectively and that all staff, partners, and beneficiaries are protected.

Responsibilities or duties

Policy & Compliance

  • Develop, review, and update safeguarding policies in line with legislation and best practice Children Act 1989 and Care Act 2014
  • Ensure the organization complies with local and national safeguarding regulations.
  • Maintain accurate, confidential, and safeguarding records.

Reporting & Case Management

  • Act as the designated point of contact for safeguarding concerns.
  • Receive, record, and assess safeguarding disclosures or allegations.
  • Refer cases to relevant external agencies.
  • Monitor ongoing cases and ensure appropriate follow-up.

Training & Awareness

  • Deliver safeguarding training and awareness sessions to all WITU stakeholders
  • Promote a culture of safeguarding across the organization.
  • Provide guidance and support to staff on safeguarding matters.

Risk Assessment & Prevention

  • Conduct risk assessments to identify potential safeguarding risks.
  • Implement preventative measures to minimize harm.
  • Ensure safe recruitment practices (e.g., background checks such as DBS in the UK).

Partners engagement

  • Liaise with external agencies, social services, and safeguarding boards.
  • Attend case conferences and safeguard meetings when required.

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in social work, Law, Psychology, Gender Studies, Development Studies, or related fields.

Experience needed

  • Minimum 2–3 years’ experience in safeguarding, protection, Gender Based Violence (GBV), or child protection.
  • Experience handling sensitive cases with confidentiality and professionalism.
  • NGO or donor-funded program experience is an advantage.

Core Skills Competencies

  • Strong knowledge of safeguarding principles, including Prevention of Sexual Exploitation and Abuse (PSEA), child protection, and GBV prevention.
  • Ability to apply survivor-centered and trauma-informed approaches.
  • Proven experience in safeguarding risk assessment and mitigation planning.
  • Competence in confidential case management and documentation.
  • High integrity with strict adherence to confidentiality and ethical standards.
  • Strong investigative skills and sound professional judgment.
  • Excellent communication and facilitation skills for training and awareness.
  • Ability to analyze safeguarding trends and recommend preventive actions.
  • Cultural sensitivity and ability to work respectfully with diverse and vulnerable groups.
  • Strong organizational skills with attention to detail and ability to manage multiple priorities.
