Comprehensive Rehabilitation Services for People with disability in Uganda (CoRSU) was established in 2006 as a private non-profit, non-governmental organization. CoRSU provides Orthopaedic Surgery, Plastic Surgery, and Rehabilitation, mainly for children as well as adults with disability.

Established in 2006, CoRSU delivers specialized care to children with disabilities, particularly from underserved communities through the CBID program. The hospital conducts an average of 3,000 surgeries annually and has supported over 70,000 Surgeries, reaching more than 100,000 people with rehabilitation services. CoRSU works in partnership with government, donors, and communities to strengthen referral systems, promote inclusion and restore mobility, dignity, and hope across Uganda

CoRSU Hospital seeks to fill the following vacancy:

Responsibilities or duties

Overall job objective:

To provide quality nursing care to patients within CoRSU which includes assessing patients' needs, developing and implementing care plans, administering medications, and providing health education.

Functional Outputs/Activities per key performance area:

Patient Care:

  • Provide nursing services including observation, diagnosis and treatment in consultation with the Nurse in Charge of respective ward
  • Maintain personal contact with patients, take note of their complaints, carry out corrective measures and escalate for further action if necessary and participate in health education of the patient (and family) when necessary
  • Ensure patients are properly received and installed and that those with lack of autonomy are assisted, especially regarding their feeding, personal hygiene, movements and comfort. For ER and OPD nurses, ensuring triage of patients in waiting areas, wards or during emergencies, detecting the priority acute/emergency cases, carrying out first aid care and referring them to the doctor when necessary
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of patients' health conditions, including physical, psychological, and social needs.
  • Develop and implement individualized care plans based on patient assessments and facility protocols.
  • Administer medications and treatments as prescribed by healthcare providers, ensuring accuracy and safety.
  • Monitor patients' vital signs and report any significant changes to the appropriate healthcare professional.
  • Provide wound care, catheterization, and other necessary nursing procedures.
  • Assist patients with activities of daily living, such as bathing, dressing, and feeding, as needed.
  • Dispense medication according to prescription, ensuring correct labelling and directions; Ensure patient understands how to take medicine by providing clear instructions
  • Participate in PHC activities including health education, MCH activities and nutrition programs

Rehabilitation:

  • Collaborate with physical therapists, occupational therapists, and other rehabilitation specialists to develop and implement rehabilitation plans.
  • Assist patients with exercises and activities to improve mobility, strength, and function.
  • Monitor patients' progress and adjust rehabilitation plans as needed.

Infection Prevention and Control:

  • Adhere to strict infection prevention and control measures to minimize the risk of healthcare-associated infections.
  • Practice proper hand hygiene and wear appropriate personal protective equipment.
  • Clean and disinfect patient care areas and equipment.
  • Ensure hygiene and sterilization criteria, including universal precautions, are met

Documentation:

  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date patient records, including medical histories, assessments, care plans, and progress notes.
  • Document medication administration and treatment delivery.
  • Complete incident reports as required.
  • Monitor the consumption of drugs and equipment required for nursing activities and notify supervisor of re-stocking needs
  • Ensure biomedical equipment is in good working order by using in accordance with user manual and protocols, perform cleaning and minor maintenance and alert supervisors in case of malfunctioning
  • Ensure data collected is accurate and submit reports according to schedule

Teamwork:

  • Collaborate effectively with other healthcare professionals, including doctors, nurses, therapists, and social workers.
  • Participate in team meetings and staff huddles to share information and coordinate care.

Financial  Management

  • Use resources allocated to the unit appropriately

Risk Management

  • Analyse existing practices & procedures to identify risks and report them.

Compliance

  • Comply with regulatory requirements and accreditation standards.
  • Adhere to all CoRSU policies

Qualifications or requirements (e.g., education, skills)

  • Diploma in  Nursing from a recognized nursing school.
  • Current registration with the Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council.
  • Valid practicing license

Experience needed

  • At least 3 years’ experience

  • Strong organizational and time  management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Compassionate and patient-centered approach to care.
  • Have Knowledge of professional nursing principles, procedures and techniques
  • Have Knowledge of medical and non-medical waste disposal procedures
  • Have Knowledge of hygiene management and IPC protocol
  • Strong clinical skills, including assessment, diagnosis, and treatment.
  • Skilled in applying professional nursing care principles and procedures in the evaluation and treatment of patients
  • A good command of both written and spoken English
