Duty Station: Kira Municipality, Wakiso District-Uganda
Job Description
Legal Aid Officers main responsibility is to provide crucial legal support, advice, and representation to clients on access to justice and human rights issues like land and property disputes, torture, arbitrary detention, child labor, discrimination against marginalized groups like refugees, sexual violence among others. Key responsibilities involve client interviews, legal research, drafting legal documents, community outreach and education, and advocating for policy reform while ensuring professional standards and case confidentiality.
Key Responsibilities
Client Interaction & Case Management
- Conduct initial interviews with clients to understand their legal issues.
- Provide legal advice, counsel, and support to clients.
- Keep clients informed about their case progress.
- Maintain detailed and confidential records of client interactions and case information.
- Follow up on assigned cases and support clients to get help and resolve disputes through formal and informal justice systems.
Legal Services & Representation
- Provide legal advice on a range of issues such as land rights, women’s rights, children’s rights among others and ensure that clients are able to access equal protections and remedies under the law.
- Represent clients in court, mediation, or other tribunals.
- Conduct legal research and prepare legal opinions, briefs, and other written materials.
- Draft legal documents and court-related paperwork.
Community Engagement & Advocacy
- Conduct legal awareness campaigns, community education sessions, and trainings.
- Collaborate with government institutions, police, and community leaders to enhance access to justice, promote and protect Human Rights.
- Engage in legal advocacy and support policy reform related to Legal Room’s mission.
Reporting & Administration
- Prepare and submit regular reports (weekly, monthly, quarterly) on activities and case progress.
- Manage client databases and ensure data accuracy.
- Coordinate with external lawyers and partners for effective case management and legal aid delivery.
Qualifications & Skills
Education: A Bachelors Degree in Law and a Post Graduate Diploma in Legal Practice is required.
Experience: Prior experience working with vulnerable, marginalized groups, and within legal aid is a significant advantage.
Skills required:
- Strong legal research, analytical, and writing skills.
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and counselling skills.
- Ability to communicate in major local languages spoken in Central, Western, Eastern and Northern Uganda will be of an added advantage.
- Ability to work effectively under pressure, manage multiple tasks, and maintain attention to detail.
- Commitment to confidentiality, integrity, and professional conduct.
- Proficiency in computer applications like Microsoft Word and Excel.
- Experience working with diverse populations and in a team setting.
