JOB DETAILS:

About Opportunity Bank

Opportunity Bank is a purpose-driven financial institution committed to expanding access to inclusive financial services while maintaining strong governance, disciplined growth, and long-term sustainability. We combine innovation, customer focus, and sound risk management to deliver meaningful impact across the communities we serve.

We are building a resilient, forward-looking bank where risk is not just controlled, but actively managed to enable growth, protect value, and sustain impact.

The Opportunity

Are you ready to shape how risk drives growth, resilience, and impact? And, does your passion align with our Mission and Vision?

As the Bank continues to strengthen its risk, governance, and technology foundations while pursuing disciplined growth, this role will be central in shaping a more stable, resilient, and forward-looking institution.

We are looking for a risk leader who brings strong judgment, independence, and commercial awareness: able to challenge constructively, influence decisions, and embed discipline across the Bank.

Role Purpose

The Head of Risk leads and strengthens the Bank’s risk management function, providing independent oversight as the second line of defence. The role ensures that risks are proactively identified, understood, and managed within the Bank’s risk appetite, while supporting sustainable growth, regulatory compliance, and operational resilience.

The role provides independent challenge across all risk-taking activities and engages directly with the Board Risk Committee to ensure strong governance, transparency, and accountability.

Working closely with the Board and Executive Management, the role shapes a forward-looking, integrated risk framework that protects the Bank while enabling it to scale responsibly.

What You Will Be Accountable For

1. Driving Risk Discipline

  • Embed risk into day-to-day decision-making: ensuring lending, pricing, and growth decisions are aligned to approved risk appetite.
  • Provide independent challenge on key decisions, including large exposures, new products, and policy exceptions.
  • Strengthen adherence to risk policies and regulatory expectations, including those of the Bank of Uganda.
  • Maintain proactive and transparent engagement with regulators on risk-related matters, including supervisory reviews.
  • Ensure timely, accurate, and reliable risk reporting to Management and the Board.

2. Safeguarding Stability

  • Protect the Bank’s capital, earnings, and liquidity through proactive identification and management of risks.
  • Monitor asset quality trends, portfolio segments, and concentration risks, ensuring early identification of stress and timely corrective action.
  • Strengthen stress testing and scenario analysis to anticipate potential shocks.
  • Support disciplined growth by balancing risk and return in line with the Bank’s strategic objectives.

3. Building Resilience

  • Strengthen operational, technology, and data risk frameworks, ensuring system reliability, integrity of reporting, and resilience of core banking operations.
  • Lead business continuity planning and ensure readiness for disruptions, including system outages and external shocks.
  • Elevate risk awareness across the Bank, embedding accountability and practical risk ownership at all levels.
  • Build and develop a high-performing risk function aligned to the Bank’s growth and transformation agenda.

What Success Looks Like

  • Risk profile consistently maintained within approved appetite
  • Improved asset quality and early identification of emerging risks
  • Strong regulatory confidence, reflected in supervisory outcomes and engagement
  • Risk function actively influencing decisions as a trusted advisor
  • Increased institutional resilience, stability, and disciplined growth

Who You Are

  • A strategic thinker with strong judgment and commercial awareness
  • Independent, confident, and able to challenge constructively
  • A clear and compelling communicator at Executive and Board level
  • Analytical, disciplined, and forward-looking
  • Resilient and able to operate effectively in a dynamic environment
  • A leader who develops people and builds strong teams
  • Motivated by both performance and purpose, with an appreciation of financial inclusion and the Bank’s mission
  • Able to balance risk discipline with responsible and inclusive growth

Why Join Us

At Opportunity Bank, you will have the opportunity to:

  • Shape the future of risk in a growing, purpose-driven institution
  • Influence strategy and decision-making at the highest level
  • Build systems, teams, and frameworks that will define the Bank’s next phase
  • Contribute to meaningful financial inclusion while maintaining excellence in governance
