About Us
We are an established large, mechanized farm in northern Uganda. We are currently looking for individuals to fill in these exciting roles within the farm.
The roles will be based at the farm up country.

The chief mechanic is responsible for the diagnosis, repair, and maintenance of a wide range of cars, trucks and agricultural machinery which may include tilage, planting, harvesting, spraying, irrigation and transportation equipment. This role requires a high level of technical expertise, leadership skills, and a commitment to providing excellent service. The chief mechanic will also mentor and guide junior mechanics.

Responsibilities:
Diagnostics and Repair:
• Conduct thorough inspections and diagnostics of tractors and other agricultural machinery to identify mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues.
• Perform complex repairs, including engine overhauls, transmission rebuilds, and hydraulic system repairs.
• Forecast issues that can cause breakdowns (especially major breakdowns) on a machine to allow the Farm Operations Manager to communicate to procurement and start the procurement process early.
Troubleshoot and resolve technical problems efficiently.

 

 

Maintenance:
• Development, documentation and training in Standard Operating Procedures for all farm equipment
• Responsible for any other preventative, planned and corrective maintenance of all farm equipment to ensure the longevity and efficiency of equipment including staff training.
• Remain physically present during work on the drivetrain related maintenances, engine cooling system and sprayer pumps including sign-off for the machine to resume work.

• Forecast issues that can cause breakdowns (especially major breakdowns) on a machine to allow the Operations Manager to communicate with procurement and start the procurement process early.

Leadership and Mentorship:
• Lead and guide junior mechanics, providing technical expertise and training.
• Oversee workshop operations and ensure a safe and efficient work environment.
• Appraising the team of junior mechanics you are working with and training and encouraging them to improve their mechanical skills.

Record Keeping:
• Maintain accurate records of repairs, maintenance work, and parts inventory.
• Complete all required reports and documentation.
• Responsible for the management of spare parts inventory and all components necessary for machine performance, including procurement of associated elements including staff training.

Safety:
• Adhere to all health and safety regulations and company policies.
• Ensure a safe working environment for all staff.
Communicate effectively with customers and team members.

Qualifications:
• An associate’s degree, diploma, certificate or equivalent in a related field (Motor vehicle mechanics/Diploma in mechanics/Automotive engineering)
• Extensive experience in agricultural equipment maintenance and repair.

• Strong knowledge of tractor systems, including engines, transmissions, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
• Excellent diagnostic and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and diagrams.
• Strong leadership and communication skills.
• Valid driver's license.
• experience of working on tractors, and other farm equipment’s would be a great advantage.
• Relevant certifications or qualifications in mechanics or agricultural engineering.

Knowledge, qualifications & Experience
A minimum of Eight (08) years in a similar job from a busy workshop. Knowledge in all repairs, preventive maintenance, spare planning, manpower management and, good record keeping and good communication skills on agricultural machines and tractors.
Communication Skills: The position demands daily interactions with employees, management, and stakeholders; therefore, communication skills are an absolute necessity.

Analytical Skills: A candidate for this position must be capable of managing the repairs, planning, trouble shooting and identifying the faults.
Interpersonal Skills: The candidate must be a helpful, calm and professional individual and demonstrate calmness during times of uncertainty/busy working hours.

Farm Mechanic

The Purpose of the role 

The farm mechanic is primarily responsible for assembly, maintenance and repair machinery and farm equipment. The farm mechanic will be responsible for ensuring functionality and reliability of machines, engines and mechanical systems. The mechanic must have manual dexterity and great attention to detail. They must be able to work with various machines and tools as well as follow all safety precautions. Reporting to the chief mechanic with dotted lines to the operations manager, the role plays a crucial part in ensuring the operational readiness of our fleet and machinery.

Responsibilities
• Conduct root cause analysis for mechanical failures.
• Using diagnostic tools to identify malfunctions and ensure equipment is operating correctly.
• Prepare parts lists and coordinate with stores regarding stock availability.
• Ensure timely and effective resolution of breakdowns, exploring local solutions like fabrication and welding when OEM spares are unavailable.
• Performing routine maintenance tasks like lubrication, fluid changes, and filter replacements.
• Perform oil changes, brake repairs, brake pad replacements, and air cleaner cleaning.
• Repair small engines (e.g., compressors, water pumps) and mentor junior mechanics.
• Troubleshoot and resolve hydraulic failures and perform basic welding as needed.
• Maintain records of repairs and maintenance done on tractors, irrigation systems, platforms, and any other equipment used for operations.
• Replacing worn or damaged parts using hand tools and power tools.
• Conduct basic wiring tasks such as light installations and battery maintenance.
• Ensure proper insulation and conduct flow and voltage measurements.
• Undertake any other mechanical duties as required.
• Adhering to safety procedures and using personal protective equipment.
• Assisting in the development and testing of new agricultural machinery.

• Assisting the supervisor to plan and stock spares for future requirements.
• Recording all spares used in/on machines to complete repairs, preparing and submitting related report to the supervisor

Requirements:
• Diploma or certificate in Agricultural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or Automotive Mechanics.
• At least 5 years of practical experience in repair and maintenance of tractors, agricultural implements, and/or automobiles.
• Ability to diagnose and rectify mechanical faults.
• Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and drawings.
• Proficient in the use of hand and power tools.
• Excellent communication and customer service skills.
• Computer-literate.
