About Organisation:

Uganda Tourism Association (UTA) is the umbrella organization that brings together all tourism trade associations in Uganda. It is the voice of the private sector in the tourism industry and includes 9 members and 2 affiliates. The members include; The Association of Uganda Tour Operators (AUTO), Uganda Safari Guides Association (USAGA), Uganda Hotel Owners’ Association (UHOA), The Uganda Association of Travel Agents (TUGATA), Uganda Community Tourism Association (UCOTA), The Association of Ugandan Women in Tourism Trade (AUWOTT), The National Arts and Cultural Crafts Association (NACCAU), The Hotel General Managers Association of Uganda (HOGMAU) and The Uganda Association of Conference and Incentive Industry (UACII). The affiliated members of the Uganda Tourism Association include; Buganda Heritage and Tourism Board (BHTB) and Kasese Tourism Investors Forum (KTIF).

 

Job Summary: Uganda Tourism Association (UTA) is seeking an experienced, prudent manager and inspiring leader to fill the position of CEO. The CEO will be the top executive at UTA, responsible for providing strategic direction and creating a vision for success.

The CEO will lead the development and execution of the Uganda Tourism Association (UTA) strategy to create impactful value. This leadership role includes being responsible for all day-to-day management decisions and for implementing UTA’s long- and short-term plans. The CEO will serve as a direct liaison between the Executive Committee, public and private stakeholders, and development partners, communicating on behalf of UTA management.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities: Additionally, the CEO will represent UTA to other private sector entities, association members, government authorities, and the public.

  • Setting the strategic direction of the Uganda Tourism Association (UTA).
  • Modeling and establishing the culture and values of the Uganda Tourism Association (UTA)
  • Allocating budget priorities of the Uganda Tourism Association (UTA) to implement programs.
  • Anticipating and analyzing problematic situations and providing solutions.
  • Overseeing all operations and activities of the Uganda Tourism Association (UTA) to ensure desired results.
  • Enforcing adherence to legal guidelines and in-house policies to maintain the legality and business ethics of the Uganda Tourism Association (UTA).
  • Leading and motivating subordinates to enhance employee engagement and develop a high-performing managerial team.
  • Leading the restructuring, rebranding, and corporate innovations for corporate positioning of the Uganda Tourism Association (UTA).
  • Building trust relations with key partners and stakeholders and acting as a point of contact.
  • Representing the Uganda Tourism Association (UTA) as required, including attendance at important functions, industry events, and public meetings
  • Leading and overseeing the implementation of the UTA’s long- and short-term plans in accordance with its strategy.
  • Ensuring that the UTA is appropriately organized to achieve the approved strategy.
  • Ensuring that expenditures of the UTA are within the authorized annual budget.
  • Establishing effective internal controls and management information systems.
  • Ensuring that the UTA conducts its activities both lawfully and ethically.
  • Maintaining high corporate standards within the UTA.
  • Acting as a liaison between management and the UTA’s Executive Committee.
  • Communicating effectively with partners, association members, employees, government authorities, development partners, other stakeholders, and the public.
  • Providing necessary information to coordinators, directors, and the Executive Committee to facilitate appropriate decision-making.
  • Collaborating with the President to develop Executive Committee agendas, determine meeting details, and location.
  • Compiling minutes and submitting timely reports to the UTA Executive Board, partners, stakeholders, and a quarterly newsletter for association members.
  • Adhering to internally established control systems and authorities.
  • Leading by personal example and encouraging employees to adhere to applicable laws, UTA standards, policies, guidelines, and laws.
  • Initiating project proposals, policy papers, and research to inform policy makers, members, and the Executive Committee.
  • Managing and updating all UTA social media platforms with accurate and current information.

 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:


 

  • Experience in developing effective strategies and implementing a clear and focused vision.
  • Strong understanding of corporate management, finance, and performance management.
  • Familiarity with diverse business functions such as marketing and PR.
  • In-depth knowledge of corporate governance and general management best practices.
  • An entrepreneurial mindset with outstanding organizational leadership skills. Analytical and problem-solving abilities.
  • Excellent communication and public speaking skills.
  • A bachelor’s degree in business administration, tourism, or any other relevant field (a postgraduate degree will be an added advantage).
  • Proficient in English.
  • Minimum of 10 years of proven experience.
  • Sound knowledge of private sector business operations.
  • Proven experience in proposal writing and negotiation.
  • Experience in project management and business planning.
  • Experience of working with or within both the public and private sectors.
  • Able to work under stressful conditions and willing to work overtime.
  • Capacity to work in a multicultural context.
  • Ability to work independently to produce expected results.
  • High level of rigor and integrity.
