Welthungerhilfe (WHH), founded in 1962, is one of Germany’s largest non-governmental aid and development agencies. We have worked in Uganda since 1986, in partnership with the Government of Uganda, national and local NGOs, jointly improving the livelihoods of the most vulnerable population in rural areas through interventions that increase their Food and Nutrition Security, improve sustainable access to WASH services, innovative youth skilling and women’s empowerment programs in five regions of Uganda.
About Project:
WHH in partnership with a donor, charity: water, is implementing a one-year WASH project within the TESO region in the districts of Soroti, Katakwi, Amuria and Kapelebyong and in the district of Napak in the Karamoja region with an exciting opening for an individual interested in becoming part of our global mission to end hunger around the world as:
Job Summary: As WASH Officer you will work to promote appropriate water sanitation and hygiene practices in the community, and ensure all activities are implemented in a timely and effective manner.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
- Strongly mobilize the community about WASH prospectus through regular field visits.
- Raise WASH profile of target area by implementing relevant approaches (CHC, PHAST, School WASH, CLTS etc ) to improve hygiene and sanitation effectively through training and sensitization sessions.
- Promote WASH Clubs in Schools, using participative approaches such as CHAST, Football for WASH, Music Dance and Drama (MDD) and establishment of school WASH clubs for hygiene and sanitation promotion in schools.
- Identify, form and train community WASH structures such as Water User Committees, Community hygiene promoters.
- Prepare annual, quarterly and monthly action plans of project activities related to WASH, including checklist for assessments, monitoring, review and evaluation of project activities.
- Provide technical support to routine WASH activities especially during the community’s uptake of CLTS and latrine construction to move up the sanitation ladder.
- Promote campaigns for improving household sanitation and hygiene through latrine construction and use.
- Organize WASH-related events effectively and efficiently.
- Participate in the development of IEC material on WASH together with WASH Advisor and WASH Coordinator
- Support the Expert Technical Issues – MEAL Officer to prepare/ organize surveys.
- Compile reports, document the results and recommendations and share with Expert Technical Issues – MEAL Officer on weekly, monthly and quarterly basis.
- Manage and Account for all funds requested for project activity in an accurate and timely manner.
- Participate in coordination meetings with the District Water department, WASH partners in sub counties and districts of operation.
- Implement the agreed upon work plan, through quality performance and according to the time planning.
- Represent WHH in meetings and conferences and any WASH events in and outside the project area if so, designed by the superior.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
- The ideal candidate for the Support Field Staff-WASH Officer must hold a minimum of a bachelor’s degree/Diploma in Social Sciences, Development Studies, Community Development, Public Health and Psychology or any other relevant field(s) or minimum of Higher Diploma from a recognized institution.
- At least three years’ work experience working with WASH technical projects in a humanitarian or development context and a track record of effective community mobilization and organization for safe health and safety.
- Preferred candidates with at least 2 years of work experience in community-based water and sanitation programs; work experience with an NGO is desirable.
- A passion for WASH, and with an interest in learning and contributing to a growing organization.
- Must have knowledge of water supply, borehole drilling, hygiene, sanitation requirements, and protocols.
- Familiarity with international minimum standards of water access, hygiene, and sanitation service delivery (i.e., SPHERE) is an advantage.
- Experience in working independently and result oriented with ability to multi-task.
- Very good communication skills both oral and written.
- Excellent interpersonal skills. Must be willing to work as a team member, take direction, and share technical skills with colleagues and counterparts and possess trust-building skills with community members.
- Computer literacy in word processing and spreadsheets is required,
- Strong planning skills and ownership of results.
- Comfortable traveling across rural communities by motorbike for four to five days each week with work in communities for most of those days. Desirable: with Valid Permit Class “A”.
- High integrity and willingness to conduct her/himself transparently.
