JOB DETAILS:
Job Purpose:
The role holder will be responsible for assessing medical insurance risks, evaluate proposals, and determine appropriate underwriting terms and premiums to ensure portfolio profitability and alignment with Britam's risk appetite and as per IRA guidelines.
Key Responsibilities:
- Analyze new and renewal proposals and determine acceptance terms based on underwriting guidelines.
- Evaluate medical histories, group demographics, and usage trends to assess risk exposure.
- Collaborate with the actuarial and pricing team to ensure competitiveness and profitability. Provide feedback on underwriting experiences to product development teams to enhance or develop new insurance products.
- Support sales teams and intermediaries with technical underwriting advice and quotations.
- Monitor portfolio performance and recommend changes to underwriting parameters when necessary.
- Ensure accurate documentation and timely issuance of policy documents.
- Maintain regulatory compliance and update underwriting processes in line with market trends.
- Conduct periodic reviews of existing policies to identify potential risks and recommend necessary changes.
- Maintain strong relationships with clients, brokers, and distribution channels.
- Stay updated on industry trends, emerging risks, regulatory changes, and new technologies that could affect underwriting practices.
- Deliver on performance requirements as defined in the departments’ strategy map, balanced scorecard and Personal Scorecard.
- Perform any other duties as may be assigned from time to time

Knowledge, experience and qualifications required
1. Bachelor’s degree in Business, Statistics or Actuarial fields
2. Professional qualification in Insurance
3. Two to four years’ experience in medical underwriting.
4. Strong analytical skills and attention to detail.
5. Knowledge of Ugandan healthcare systems, medical insurance underwriting practices, provider relations and insurance best practices.
6. Experience in customer, market and competitor understanding.
7. Knowledge of Insurance regulatory requirements.
8. Resilient, dynamic, energetic, and enthusiastic. Must be highly driven and enjoy working with people.
