JOB DETAILS:

JOB SUMMARY

This position contributes to the calling of Medical Teams International by providing midwifery services during pregnancy, labour and postpartum periods in line with health protocols, universal hygienic and newborn caring standards. Engages in activities that promote MCH, family planning and proper nutrition.

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide high quality and comprehensive Maternal, newborn and child health services during and after pregnancy, including managing complications and referring high risk cases
  • Provide antenatal care services including health education, assessment of foetal & maternal wellbeing, high risk pregnancies, birth preparedness, testing and offering treatment for various pregnancy-related conditions such infections, pre-eclampsia, etc.
  • Providing care during labour and delivery monitor the general health conditions of the mother and the newborn, manage complications during & after delivery and ensure accurate documentation of patient information
  • Provide counselling to mothers on pregnancy and post-pregnancy  management, including proper breastfeeding techniques, bathing and preparation of bottles.
  • Participate in primary health care activities including Nutrition services, HCT services PMTCT care, treatment and support at both health facility and within the community
  • Provide primary care to women of reproductive age in accordance with the Basic Package of Health Services.
  • Provide modern methods of family planning through counselling on the various methods, administration of the contraceptive, management of side effects, mentorship of village health teams on FP methods, supervise distribution of short-term methods e.g. sayana press and carry out community sensitization
  • Provide comprehensive high quality immunization services including safe vaccine management, administration of vaccines to eligible population, management and reporting of AEFIs, adequate documentation and reporting in line with Ministry of Health immunization guideline
  • Support Clinicians in the management of sexual violence cases e.g. rape etc.
  • Monitor the consumption of drugs, and supplies required for service provision and notify supervisor of re-stocking needs
  • Ensure biomedical equipment is in good working order by using in accordance with user manual and protocols, perform cleaning and minor maintenance and alert supervisor in case of malfunctioning
  • Ensure hygiene and sterilization criteria, including universal precautions, are met
  • Ensure that medical practices are conducted with the highest level of integrity and ethics according to professional and MTI Codes of Conduct
  • Ensure data collected is accurate and submit reports according to schedule
  • Other duties as assigned

EDUCATION, LICENSES, & CERTIFICICATIONS

  • Certificate of Enrolled Midwifery from an accredited School of Nursing and Midwifery is required
  • Registration with Uganda Nurses and Midwives Council is required
  • Valid practising license is required

EXPERIENCE

  • 1 year of midwifery experience
  • Experience working with international NGOs is an added advantage

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES

Knowledge:

  • Knowledge of professional midwifery principles, procedures and techniques
  • Knowledge of medical and non-medical waste disposal procedures
  • Knowledge of hygiene management and IPC protocol

Skills:

  • Skilled in applying professional midwifery care principles and procedures in the evaluation and treatment of patients
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • A good command of both written and spoken English

Abilities:

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of patient information and adhere to professional code of conduct
  • Ability to treat all patients and staff with respect, without prejudice
  • Ability to provide high quality, ethical, compassionate care that places the needs of the patient first
  • Ability to maintain detailed records with high accuracy
  • Ability to be flexible and manage stress
  • Ability to support MTI Calling and adhere to the MTI Code of Conduct
