Main Responsibilities

The role of a Teaching Assistant is essential to the smooth running of the life of this busy and successful Junior School. Working as part of a team, under the direction of the Assistant Principal Operations & Logistics, Heads of Year, and the Learning Support Department the Teaching Assistant with responsibility for Outdoor Play will support the learning and emotional and physical wellbeing of children throughout the Junior School, with particular focus on supporting pupils during break times and when outside of the classroom environment.

Supervision And Playground Support

  • Supervising children at break times as needed. This will include in and around all the Junior School buildings including the playing field and classrooms
  • Distributing lunchtime equipment and ensuring it is safely put away
  • Administering the ordering of any new equipment as necessary
  • Maintaining clean and tidy play areas and actively returning lost items to children
  • Ensuring that the corridors are tidy throughout and at the end of the day
  • Managing lost property in the Junior School. Ensuring that belongings are returned to their owners in an efficient and timely manner
  • Registering and escorting pupils to the school bus service between 15:40 and 16:00
  • Providing after-school supervision between 16:00 and 17:15 daily
  • Update the “Waiters Tracker” spreadsheet/dashboard with the information retrieved from the Waiters App
  • Accompanying and assisting on School visits and outings as well as in the running of workshops and events held at School
  • Accompanying children as required as they move from one building to another
  • Helping children prepare for sport, exercise and swimming lessons, supervising them changing where necessary

Pastoral Care

  • Helping children to acquire strategies for coping with the playground environment; making sure that they are safe, obeying the playground rules and learning the arts of cooperation and fair play
  • Helping to take care of children; comforting them when they are sick and distressed; assisting them with washing or cleaning when necessary (e.g. after being sick); giving individual attention when it is required
  • Administering basic first aid when the children are hurt
  • Liaising with the Deputy Principal (Pastoral) regarding any pastoral, behavioural or procedural difficulties
  • Developing appropriate relationships with each pupil including learning their names and being able to recognise and report concerning behaviours
  • Engaging the pupils in constructive and positive activities and being proactive at all times
  • Reinforcing the values, expectations and behaviours required by the school
  • Being a positive and enthusiastic role model to the pupils
  • Taking shared responsibility for health and safety and cleanliness and tidiness of communal areas

Teaching and Learning

  • Working alongside class teachers to support and enrich the learning of all individuals within a class
  • Working with individual children and small groups to support and enrich learning in all subjects, but particularly in Literacy and Numeracy
  • Working with individual children and small groups to support social development
  • Working closely with Learning Support Department to support children with additional needs
  • Working closely with teachers to provide a stimulating learning environment for the children
  • Organising class equipment, setting up activities, and clearing up after activities
  • Mounting and displaying children’s work
  • Assisting teachers with the preparation of classroom materials including photocopying
  • Taking registration if a form tutor is absent and supervising (although not teaching) a form for short periods of teacher absence
  • Joining in professional discussions and staff meetings during the school day and after school
  • Liaising with teachers, Heads of Year and the Learning Support Department regarding the progress of individual children
  • Keeping form tutors and any other relevant members of staff informed about any matters that affect the children

Other

  • Covering reception duties on an ad hoc basis as required
  • Assisting the SLT team on an ad-hoc basis with administrative support as required

These duties and responsibilities are intended as a guide. They are not exhaustive: the Teaching Assistant with responsibility for Outdoor Play will be expected to undertake any reasonable task or responsibility as required by the Assistant Principal Operations & Logistics or the Principal of the Junior School.
