What will you do?

As a Staff Platform Engineer, you will operate as a senior individual contributor whose work consistently spans multiple squads and company-wide systems. You’ll set technical direction, define patterns, and deliver high-leverage improvements - balancing hands-on engineering with thought leadership, mentoring, and cross-team influence to raise the bar for reliability, developer productivity, and operational excellence.

Core Responsibilities

Engineering & Technical Leadership

  • Design and deliver scalable, observable, and resilient infrastructure for our AWS-native stack (EKS, Aurora, Terraform).
  • Define and socialise reliability design patterns (resilience strategies, failover models, rollback/alerting standards).
  • Lead improvements in CI/CD, release automation, incident response, and developer experience.
  • Actively contribute code and reviews — especially for early-stage, complex, or cross-cutting work.
  • Make deliberate trade-offs that balance speed, resilience, and cost efficiency.
  • Guide best practices for GitHub-based workflows (branching, actions, bots, reviews) to improve developer productivity and release confidence.

Observability & Operational Readiness

  • Advance monitoring maturity: richer dashboards, alerts, and instrumentation.
  • Define and embed SLOs and error budgets across teams.
  • Lead post-incident reviews, using them to coach others and strengthen operational muscles.
  • Proactively drive systemic reliability improvements across services.
  • Instrument and monitor GraphQL and API gateway performance, ensuring resilient, observable, and cost-efficient query handling.

AI-Native Platform Leadership

  • Embed AI and automation into reliability and observability workflows (e.g. AI-driven alerting, anomaly detection, automated incident triage).
  • Pilot and scale new AI-native practices, ensuring they improve productivity, resilience, and cost efficiency.
  • Shape Yomly’s organisational approach to AI/agent adoption in platform engineering, influencing standards and accelerating safe, ambitious adoption across teams.

Influence & Mentorship

  • Elevate engineering practices through peer mentorship, design reviews, and knowledge sharing.
  • Be a visible advocate for reliability, resilience, and platform-first thinking.
  • Shape ways of working across squads — championing best practices in infrastructure, testing, observability, and CI/CD.
  • Act as a “force multiplier” by raising the bar for technical excellence across multiple teams, mentoring peers (including senior engineers) to navigate complex trade-offs and grow their leadership impact.

Strategy & Organisational Impact

  • Partner with engineering leadership to translate company strategy into grounded technical initiatives.
  • Engage directly with vendors (AWS, New Relic, PagerDuty) — proactively managing costs, capabilities, and risk.
  • Ensure audit-readiness for SOC 2 / ISO 27001, embedding compliance into platform design.
  • Shape and influence platform strategy in partnership with engineering leadership, ensuring technical direction aligns with company goals, platform health, and cost discipline.

Recruiting & Culture

  • Actively contribute to recruiting and interviewing, calibrating and upholding the hiring bar for Senior and Staff-level engineers, and influencing how Yomly attracts and assesses top talent.
  • Represent Yomly externally (conferences, meetups, communities) as a technical ambassador.
  • Coach and mentor peers across teams, strengthening Yomly’s technical leadership pipeline.

Success Metrics (first 12 months)

  • Platform availability (rolling 90 days) - aligned with customer trust and uptime commitments
  • Median time-to-production — accelerating business impact through faster delivery
  • Median time-to-recovery (MTTR) — directly improving customer trust and retention
  • Change failure rate — raising quality while maintaining delivery velocity
  • AWS cost per active employee record — contributing to gross margin efficiency
  • Security incident response SLO compliance — protecting customers and regulatory trust
  • Audit readiness (SOC 2 / ISO 27001) — ensuring enterprise-grade compliance and commercial viability

What We’re Looking For

Must Have

  • Significant experience in Platform Engineering, DevSecOps, or SRE within AWS-based architectures, ideally B2B SaaS serving 10k+ DAUs.
  • Proven track record at Senior Engineer or above with influence across teams.
  • Strong foundation in AWS infrastructure (EKS, Aurora/RDS, IAM).
  • Expertise in Infrastructure-as-Code (Terraform strongly preferred).
  • Hands-on experience improving CI/CD, monitoring, and release workflows.
  • Deep understanding of SLOs, error budgets, and incident management.
  • Comfort balancing pragmatic delivery with long-term technical soundness.

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with observability stacks (Prometheus, CloudWatch, Grafana, New Relic).
  • Experience optimising AWS costs at scale.
  • Exposure to SOC 2 / ISO 27001 audits and compliance frameworks.
  • Passion for technical mentorship, recruiting, and shaping high-performance engineering culture.
