JOB DETAILS:
The Unit is an internationally recognised centre of excellence with dominant research themes in the areas of HIV and emerging infections, vaccines and immunity, and chronic diseases and cancer. Through a multidisciplinary approach, intersecting basic science, epidemiological research, social-behavioural research and the conduct of new intervention evaluation studies, the Unit contributes knowledge on changing epidemics and diseases, the evaluation of innovative health care options, treatment and prevention and the development of health policy and practice in Africa and worldwide. Following the signing of strategic transfer agreements between the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) and the Medical Research Council (MRC UK), the Unit formally joined LSHTM on 1st February 2018.
The exciting new partnership will boost research capacity into current and emerging health issues in Africa and throughout the world. The Unit is based at the UVRI Entebbe campus with established outposts in Kalungu, Masaka, Wakiso and Kampala Districts. The Unit is now seeking enthusiastic and experienced individuals to fill the following position:
Social Science Research Team Leader - (01 Position)

Reports to: Project Leader
Station: Entebbe
Job Purpose:
The job holder will support the project leader and PI of a project in the implementation of the study with a particular focus on qualitative data collection and analysis and training and mentoring of research assistants.
Roles & Responsibilities
1. Principal duties;
• Request and gain consent for data collection;
• Assist in developing study training procedures and contribute to staff training and supervision of social science data collection and analysis;
• Conduct and manage qualitative data collection;
• Manage and supervise verbatim transcription of qualitative data from interviews and focus group discussions;
• Manage and superviise coding of qualitative data from interviews and focus group
discussions;
• Conduct data analysis of qualitative data from interviews and focus group discussions
• Ensure filing of collected data and project documents;
• Follow up of participants and conducting quality control of qualitative data; and,
• Draft manuscripts and presentations from study data.
2. Line management responsibilities;
• Train and mentor other study staff (social science research assistant).
3. Financial management;
• Handle payments to participants during study activities and provide accountability to the MRC administration for the same; and,
• Handle cash expenses / DFA holder for a maximum of 500,000 UGX.
Person Specification
• First degree in a social science subject;
• Masters level qualification is an added advantage;
• GDPR and HSP/GCP training;
• Should possess at least 4 years work experience in qualitative data collection, analysis and writing up findings;
• Experience of working within a multi-disciplinary team with clinical/epidemiological researchers;
• Experience in developing training materials;
• Experience in delivering training;
• Experience in data analysis using NVIVO;
• Experience in petty cash handling;
• Experience in drafting academic publications and reports as first author;
• Should have knowledge of different qualitative data collection methods;
• Knowledge of good clinical practice and ethics in research;
• Self driven;
• Excellent social and communication skills;
• Excellent organizational skills; and,
• Able to work independently as well as part of a team.
