Job Overview

As part of Fenix’s engagement to bring life-changing products to its customers, Fenix is expanding its product base to include a new range of clean-cooking products and services. To do so efficiently, Fenix has created an independent and entrepreneurial team, the Fumba team. The Fumba team is looking for a highly motivated, innovative and well organised Senior Design Engineer to join this new team. The Senior Design Engineer will join the Fenix team in designing new products and enhancing our current products. The ideal candidate would have 8+ years experience as a Design Engineer working in the energy industry and/or consumer products that have achieved medium to high volume production. In this role, candidates would work on the design and commercialization of pay-as-you cooking products as part of the engineering team. Candidates should expect a fast-paced startup culture. They will be expected to come up with innovative and daring solutions to new problems and to take ownership over a wide range of responsibilities.

This position offers an incredible opportunity to work with a dynamic team of engineers, business development and commercial professionals and to directly contribute to the success of the Fumba team startup. Candidates must have a passion for entrepreneurship, renewable energy and sustainable development in frontier markets.

Key Responsibilities Deliveries and Activities

• Designs parts, components and assemblies to meet the requirements of assigned products,
• Create CAD models, including part and assembly drawings, to support manufacturing, testing and assembly, and provide support for the development of tools/ fixtures to assist with assembly,
• Evaluate mechanical and electromechanical systems and products by designing and conducting testing and validation procedures,
• Work with management and other departments in the Fumba team to develop alternatives and options to refine current products,
• Support product sourcing, purchasing and selection as required by the design process,
• Provide technical and engineering support for day-to-day tasks, product development and process improvements,
• Confirm system and product capabilities by designing feasibility and testing methods and metrics,
• Ensure system and product quality by designing testing methods for testing finished product and system capabilities, confirm proper fabrication, assembly and installation processes,
• Prepare product reports by collecting, analyzing and summarizing information and trends,
• Participate in technical reviews of requirements, specifications, designs and applicable codes,
• Set up and manage relationships and partnerships with engineering teams at Fenix,
• Help create a culture across Fenix that recognizes and embraces Fenix’s vision and values, always encourages success and supports all employees.

Required Skills & Experience

• Demonstrates passion for Fenix’s mission, values and customers,
• 8 years work experience in product design, design engineering or a similar discipline,
• Bachelor’s Degree in Science or Engineering,
• Expert control of CAD tools,
• Strong entrepreneurial and creative mindset,
• Organised and able to follow through and prioritize tasks,
• Strong attention to details,
• Strong critical and analytical thinking skills,
• Experience in designing and conducting qualitative and quantitative research,
• Advanced quantitative analysis skills and proficiency in excel,
• Ability to manage a multicultural team,
• Willingness to take on non-traditional tasks, roles, responsibilities and challenges needed to accomplish Fumba teams’ goals and objectives,
• Experience as a collaborative, hands-on team player and eagerness to learn new tools and / or roll-up sleeves to get the job done,
• Commitment to live and work in East Africa for at least 2 years.

Desired Skills

• Experience designing clean cooking or gas cooking products,
• Experience working with vendors overseas,
• Familiar with CFD software,
• Experience working with last-mile customers in Africa,
• Demonstrated entrepreneurial or intrapreneurial experience inside a larger company.
