JOB DETAILS:
Makerere University Council invites applications from suitably qualified individuals for the position of Second Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Makerere University, established in 1922, is the oldest and largest public university in Uganda. The University seeks to fill the position of Second Deputy Vice-Chancellor to support the Vice-Chancellor in overseeing research, innovation, and other strategic functions of the University.
1. ROLE
The Second Deputy Vice-Chancellor will:
- Deputize for the Vice-Chancellor in the absence of the First Deputy Vice-Chancellor.
- Oversee research, innovation, and knowledge transfer partnerships.
- Coordinate the development and implementation of research policies and programs.
- Promote innovation and entrepreneurship within the University.
- Manage the University’s resource mobilization and partnership initiatives.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the Vice-Chancellor or University Council.
2. PURPOSE OF THE JOB
To provide leadership in research, innovation, and knowledge transfer, ensuring the University remains a leader in cutting-edge research and innovation in the region and beyond.
3. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The Second Deputy Vice-Chancellor shall:
- Oversee the development and implementation of research and innovation programs.
- Coordinate the University’s research agenda and ensure alignment with national and international priorities.
- Promote innovation, entrepreneurship, and knowledge transfer partnerships.
- Supervise research centers and ensure their effective operation.
- Mobilize resources for research and innovation through grants, partnerships, and other funding mechanisms.
- Oversee the commercialization of research outputs and intellectual property.
- Represent the Vice-Chancellor in research and innovation matters as delegated.
- Contribute to the overall strategic planning and development of the University.
4. PERSON SPECIFICATION
- Must hold a PhD or equivalent degree from a recognized institution.
- Must be at least at the rank of Associate Professor in a reputable institution.
- Must have at least 10 years of academic and managerial experience, 5 of which should be at a senior management level in a university or equivalent institution.
- Must have a proven track record of research and publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Must demonstrate strong leadership, managerial, and interpersonal skills.
- Must have experience in research management, resource mobilization, and partnership development.
- Must have a good understanding of research and innovation ecosystems.
- Must be a person of high integrity, with no record of ethical violations.
5. SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
- Strong leadership and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage and resolve conflicts effectively.
- Strategic thinking and planning skills.
- Resource mobilization and partnership development skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
- Proficiency in ICT and its application in research and innovation management.
