WHRDN-U works to ensure that the rights of WHRDs are recognized, protected, and promoted through feminist, holistic, and gender-sensitive approaches to protection and empowerment.
Job Purpose:
The Project Protection Assistant will support the implementation of WHRDN-U’s protection activities, particularly in emergency response, capacity building, coordination, and documentation of attacks against WHRDs. She will work closely with the Protection teams to ensure effective delivery of protection services for WHRDs in Uganda.
Roles and Responsibilities of the Project Protection Assistant
1. Capacity Building and Training
- Assist in the design and development of relevant training materials tailored to the needs of Women Human Rights Defenders (WHRDs).
- Assist in conducting and facilitating in-person and virtual training sessions for WHRDs across various regions.
- Assist in assessing training needs of WHRDs and other key stakeholders through surveys, consultations, and feedback sessions.
- Assist in planning, organizing, and implementing staff development sessions to strengthen team capacity and internal learning.
- Assist in conducting follow-up and mentorship sessions with trained WHRDs to ensure application of skills and knowledge gained.
2. Protection Program Implementation and Coordination
- Assist in coordinating rapid response interventions for WHRDs at risk.
- Assist the Protection teams in conducting field visits, solidarity visits, and urgent case verifications.
- Assist in maintaining up-to-date records of WHRD cases and protection referrals.
- Assist in organizing healing spaces and collective care sessions for WHRDs.
- Support in the preparation of work plans, budgets, and reports related to protection activities.
3. Advocacy and Networking
- Support to represent the organization at relevant advocacy meetings, stakeholder forums, and networking events.
- Actively participate in discussions and share key lessons, learnings, and outcomes from WHRDN-U's capacity-building interventions.
- Build and maintain relationships with civil society actors, partners, government departments, and other key stakeholders.
4. Monitoring, Evaluation, and Reporting
- Assist in documenting all training sessions, outreach activities, and stakeholder engagements.
- Assist in preparing timely and high-quality reports, including participant feedback, outcomes, and recommendations.
- Assist in capturing success stories, lessons learned, and best practices to inform future programming and donor reporting.
Qualifications, Skills, and Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Gender Studies, Social Work, Development Studies, Community Psychology, or related field.
- At least 2 years of relevant experience working in human rights, gender, or protection programming (preferably GBV survivors).
- Strong commitment to feminist principles and gender equality.
- Good interpersonal, communication, and coordination skills.
- Basic knowledge of protection, referral pathways, and emergency response.
- Experience working in women’s rights, human rights, or community-based advocacy is an added advantage.
- Excellent organizational and time management skills.
Required Competencies
- Strong facilitation and training skills, particularly with community-based and grassroots groups.
- Excellent public speaking and presentation abilities.
- Friendly, outgoing, and people-oriented personality with strong interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work under pressure and maintain professionalism in challenging circumstances.
- Strong writing and documentation skills for preparing reports, training materials, and communication content.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
- Demonstrated ability to work independently, manage multiple tasks, and meet tight deadlines.
- Flexible and adaptable to different cultural, social, and working environments.
