Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy Officer, OWH Masindi

OVERVIEW

OneWorld Health is an international organization that proves quality, affordable healthcare to people in need. We achieve our mission through the development of facility-based medical programs in East Africa using social enterprise models of development.  Through this model we are able to maximize sustainability and scalability while reaching underserved populations on the continent.
Our hospital in Masindi is our first and largest health facility with 40 medical and 20 administrative staff, serving 1800 patients a month through a combination of outpatient, inpatient, surgical, dental, and other specialty services.  This year we are adding three new wards, a second operating theater, and a therapy clinic.
Physiotherapy/Occupational therapy is our newest service; therefore, we are seeking a specialist who is more than just a great healthcare provider, but also a great leader.  We are looking for a candidate with excellent customer service skills, who can build and improve a new department, and who will be a team player in our flagship hospital.

DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Key Result 1: Oversee the delivery of therapy services to patients at Masindi-Kitara Medical Center (MKMC)
  • Provide appropriate patient centered care through proper evaluation and treatment
  • Employ relevant evaluation/assessment tools based on patients’ diagnoses
  • Utilize appropriate treatments to promote independence and safety in activities of daily living, mobility, and work/education.
  • Develop adequate rapport with patient and caregivers
  • Provide the necessary patient education to patient and caregivers
Key Result 2: Coordinate the Implementation and Sustainability of Therapy Services at MKMC
  • Develop and maintain an adequate documentation system to be utilized by the therapy facility
  • Continued identification and maintenance of appropriate resources and equipment for therapy clinic
  • Train and supervise therapy aides and students in rehabilitative skills
  • Collaborate with medical personnel to create a sustainable referral system that guarantees quality care for patients
  • Assist with recruitment of more therapists with the growth of the clinic
Key Result 3: Adhere to Professional Education Standards.
  • Develop Continuing Medical Education (CME) sessions for staff at MKMC regarding specific therapy services/conditions in coordination with the director of continued medical education.
  • Maintain professional knowledge in order to provide patients with treatment plans based on the best evidence
  • Obtain correct number of CME credits required for continued license renewal
  • Comply with MKMC, UAOT/UAPT, AHPC, MoH educational requirements

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

  • Physiotherapy/Occupational Therapy Diploma from a respected Ugandan or Foreign University
  • 2 years of professional working experience in PT/OT or related field preferred
  • Registered in good standing through the Ugandan Association of Occupational Therapy (UAOT) or the Ugandan Association of Physiotherapy (UAPT)
  • Licensed in good standing through the Physiotherapy & Occupational Therapy Board, Allied Health Professional Council (AHPC), Ministry of Health (MoH)
  • Knowledge of UAOT/UAPT, AHPC and MoH regulations
  • Significant clinical experience

  • A team player with excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • A good command of both written and spoken English
  • Excellent Management skills
  • Able to build and develop rapport and capacity of others
  • Diligent and detail oriented with strong problem-solving skills
  • Follow MKMC protocols for infection control, waste management and environmental safety
