Job Summary;
The Mechanical Technician within the framework of the department’s objectives and yearly action plans, his/her mission is to ensure proper maintenance of mechanical equipment and hence maximum reliability of equipment in a safe and efficient manner at optimum cost thorough inspection and feedback.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
• Ensures proper housekeeping is done at all times within work sites.
• Inspect all machinery and equipment in the section on a daily basis as maintenance inspection requirement and carry out minor repairs.
• Carry out the daily, weekly, fortnightly, monthly and ‘shut down’ maintenance according to work orders issued.
• Carry out emergency repair and maintenance of faulty machinery and equipment as quickly as possible to ensure continued production.
• Confirm that the permit-to-work (PTW) is issued to the foreman before work is commenced and record work done in the work order for historical purposes.
• Prepare and ensure the use of correct tools and spares.
• Ensure that Plant safety standards and procedures are adhered to while carrying out duties.
• Keep work site clean by removing all materials on completion of the job and placing in the proper disposal or storage area.
• Attends to breakdowns, investigates and traces and rectifies Faults.
• Performs all maintenance tasks in the section as be allocated.
• Makes proposals to modify or improve equipment for better performance or safety improvements to the supervisor.
• Carry out risk assessment on all tasks prior to execution and ensure that all jobs carried out under his/her supervision are done safely and in line with existing procedures.
• Perform energy isolation prior to working on equipment as per procedure or as evaluated on the risk assessment.
• Performs on call duties as programmed.
• Participates in all aspects of maintenance planning weekly or shut downs.
• Report to the supervisor, when the Plant or part of the Plant has to be stopped for maintenance purposes giving time frames, requirements and results to support business decision making and planning.
• Assists in Training of Apprentices and others when required.
• Perform plant inspections as and when instructed by the Supervisor and reports in line with accepted procedures to support maintenance planning and execution.
• Perform any other tasks assigned by the foreman
Required Qualifications skills and attributes.
• Must have a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering qualification or equivalent education from a recognized University
• At least 1 years work experience preferably in a busy commercial or industrial environment and with good exposure to manufacturing processes is an added advantage.
• Strong knowledge of basic maintenance tasks (welding, hydraulics, pneumatics, bearing installations, shaft alignment…) preferred.
