About the Company:

DFCU Bank is a fast growing commercial bank offering a variety of innovative products and services. DFCU Limited was started by the Commonwealth Development Corporation (CDC) of the United Kingdom and the Government of Uganda through the Uganda Development Corporation (UDC) under the name of Development Finance Company of Uganda Limited. Later restructuring brought in DEG (of Germany) and International Finance Corporation (IFC) as equal partners with CDC and UDC, each having a 25% stake in the company. Its objective was to support long-term development projects whose financing needs and risk did not appeal to the then existing financial commercial lending institutions.

 

Job Summary:  Reporting to the Head of Credit Control & Disbursement, the role holder will be in charge of drafting and reviewing all contracts for Corporate and Retail Banking borrowing customers, that can easily be interpreted by either parties and are enforceable in case of default, setting out all the terms and conditions under which the bank will make available to the customer the approved credit facility. Providing advisory services to the business units and in charge of Service Level Agreements with internal stakeholders and offering coaching and supervisory services to the Credit Control Officers.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Lead the credit control team responsible for preparing credit-related legal documents, offering professional legal advice to business units and credit approval as needed, guaranteeing accurate and timely processing of approved credit.
  • Charged with preparation of credit-related legal agreements for complex transactions that require expertise, judgement and further mitigating credit risk.
  • Supervise all collateral management activities to minimize the chances of error, fraud and delays that could jeopardize the Bank’s operations, while the Bank’s legal rights over collateral are upheld.
  • Provide strategic legal insights into credit related matters to players within the credit value chain and train the teams, to enhance understanding of legal aspects of loans, addressing emerging issues, and equipping them to manage client concerns.
  • Oversee compliance and risk management activities, aligning practices with regulatory requirements and operational objectives.
  • Conduct monthly spot checks on securities management process, testing controls, guiding the team on the next course of action to minimize potential losses or litigation risks, with an aim of safeguarding the bank’s interests.
  • Oversee periodic security sensitivity analysis, validating the legal standing of securities for credit facilities showing stress signs.
  • Manage unit budget, optimizing resources to achieve operational efficiency while ensuring alignment with departmental financial goals.

 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Laws from a reputable University.
  • A postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice.
  • Must be enrolled Advocate of High Court and subordinate Courts.
  • 7 years’ experience in working in a busy law firm or financial institution with extensive exposure to banking and finance transactions.
  • Exposure to credit operations, documentation and collateral management.
  • Knowledge of banking and credit facilities.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail and critical analysis skills.
  • Excellent legal drafting skills.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Self-motivated and result oriented.
  • Requires minimum supervision
