Job Description/Requirements

Hospice Africa Uganda (HAU) is a not-for-profit charitable NGO established in 1993 with the vision “Palliative Care for all in need in Africa.” HAU is registered by Uganda’s NGO Bureau and is a licensed private not-for-profit (PNFP) health facility registered by the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners’ Council (UMDPC).

The three pillars of HAU:

  •  To provide an affordable and culturally appropriate clinical service to patients suffering from Cancer, HIV/AIDS, and/ or other life–threatening illnesses
  •  To offer education in Palliative Care to health and non-health professionals
  •  To support the spread of Palliative Care to other African countries

HAU has three clinical sites: Hospice Kampala, Mobile Hospice Mbarara and Little Hospice Hoima. HAU promotes modern methods of pain and symptom control as well as holistic- centered care for patients and families living with cancer, HIV/AIDS, and other life-threateningconditions. HAU owns the Institute of Hospice and Palliative Care in Africa (IHPCA) which is accredited by the National Council for Higher Education (NCHE) to offer short certificate courses, diplomas, bachelors, and post graduate diplomas and masters in palliative care. HAU also offers training and support to palliative care “initiators” throughout Africa through its International Programs division.

Job Purpose:

Ensure that the management and welfare of the human resources of HAU is in line with the Ugandan Labour laws and in tandem with HAU Human resource policies. This entails supervision and coordination of human resources functions of work and transparent communication within HAU as required by HAU policies.

Key Responsibilities

1. Human Resource Management

  • Strategic management: Spearhead the planning, coordinating, montoring and reviewing the Human Resource and Administration activities in order to guarantee the provision of quality service
  • Develop and implement HR policies and procedures in alignment with organizational goals.
  • Oversee recruitment, onboarding, and retention strategies to attract and retain top talent.
  • Manage performance appraisal systems and provide support for employee development.
  • Ensure compliance with labour laws and health and safety regulations.
  • Foster a positive and inclusive work environment that promotes staff well-being.

2. Administration Management

  • Oversee day-to-day administrative operations to enhance organizational efficiency.
  • Manage office facilities and ensure a safe and conducive work environment.
  • Develop and monitor administrative budgets and optimize resource allocation.
  • Implement and maintain effective record-keeping and documentation systems.
  • Coordinate logistics for meetings, workshops, and other organizational events.

Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in Human Resource Management, Business Administration, or a related field. A Master’s degree or a Post graduate Diploma in Human Resource management or Administration is an added advantage.
  • Minimum of five years of experience in a similar role, preferably within the non-profit sector.
  • Strong knowledge of Ugandan labor laws and HR best practices.
  • Exceptional organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
