Job Description/Requirements

Reports to class Teacher/Head of Department/Section Coordinator

A teacher at Galaxy International School Uganda (GISU) shall be required to fully comprehend and internalize the vision, mission, goals and philosophy of GISU and conduct himself/herself in accordance with the cherished principles and practices of the school.

Reports to: The School Coordinator/H.O.D and works in collaboration with the Classroom Teacher. A teacher at GISU shall be required to perform the following professional duties:

a) Teaching

  1. Plans and prepares course outlines, records of work and lesson plans.
  2. Teaches according to the educational needs of the individual students assigned to him/her, including the setting and marking of work to be carried out by the students in school and at home.
  3. Assesses, records and reports on the progress, development

b) Assessments and Reports

  1. Provides or contributes to oral and written assessments, reports and references relating to individual students and groups of students except in situations where doing so might be regarded as compromising a teacher’s own position.
  2. Sets, marks and moderates/invigilates examinations under the direction of the department head and Examinations coordinator.
  3. Prepares end of term reports within the set deadlines.
  4. Participates in invigilation of exams, lesson substitution, school duty and take on the role of a form teacher or other assignments as given by the
  5. Participates in arrangements for preparing students for external examinations and in assessing students for the purpose of such examinations.
  6. Records and reports students’ assessment and participate in arrangements for students’ presentation for and supervision of such examinations.

c) Staff Professional Development/ Training/ Reviews/ Meetings

  1. Reviews from time to time his/her methods of teaching and programs of work.
  2. Participates, if required, in any scheme of staff development and performance review.
  3. Participates in arrangements for his/her further training and professional development as a teacher.
  4. Advises and co-operates with the principal and teachers on the preparation and development of courses of study, teaching materials and programs, methods of teaching and assessment and pastoral arrangement.
  5. Participates in meetings at the school which relate to the school curriculum or the administration or organization of the school, including pastoral arrangements.

d) Discipline, Health and Safety

  1. Maintains good order and discipline among students in accordance with the policies of the school and safeguarding their health and safety both the policies of the school and safeguarding their health and safety both the policies of the school and safeguarding their health and safety both when they are on the school premises and in school activities elsewhere.
  2. Ensures that all reasonable safety precautions are carried out pertaining to school activities.

e) Other Duties

  1. Promotes the general well-being and progress of individual students assigned to him/her.
  2. Provides professional, ethical and pastoral guidance, direction and advice to students on educational and social matters.
  3. Provides professional, ethical and pastoral guidance to students on their further education and future careers including information about sources of more expert advice on specific questions.
  4. Makes records of and reports on the personal and social needs of students except on occasions where doing so might be regarded as compromising a teacher’s own position.
  5. Communicates and consults with the parents on educational and social matters related to the students.
  6. Communicates and co-operates with such persons or bodies outside the school as may be approved by the school authority
  7. Participates in meetings arranged for any of the purposes described above.
  8. Adopts a positive approach to all students in the school in respect of capability, behavior and cultural diversity.
  9. Works closely with department heads in setting and updating relevant schemes of work, curriculum materials etc., including useful trips and CAL.
  10. Maintains a record of work and marks as agreed with the department head.
  11. Organizes remedial sessions where necessary to meet targets.
  12. Prepares students thoroughly for good examination success, working with
  13. Sets and marks homework following department policy. Check note books and return poor work upon making correction with students.
  14. Teaches a maximum of 26 periods a week.
  15. Performs any other reasonable additional duties as directed assigned by the School Coordinator.
