OVERVIEW

The Head of Livelihoods and Climate Adaptative Programming will use their in-depth contextual understanding, technical expertise, leadership and relationship building skills to define and deliver our strategic ambition for Livelihoods and Climate Change in Uganda. The role will lead a team and the strategy development and the technical design and implementation of high-quality programmes that deliver change for children in both emergency and development programming. The role will also support a technical specialist on Climate Change (Adaptation and Mitigation) Specialist as well as an indirect team of youth empowerment coordinators and project managers.

To be a strong supporter and advocate for children in this role you will need to have:

  • Master’s in international development, Climate mitigation, adaption and resilience, agronomics or related field and/or significant experience in Youth development and empowerment
  • At least 7 years’ experience of working internationally in Food Security and Livelihood with an understanding of the impacts of the climate crisis on community livelihoods and how livelihoods programmes can be adapted to promote greater resilience to climate change
  • At least 7 years’ experience of working nationally and internationally on Climate resilience from a livelihoods perspectives issues in emergency or development settings.
  • At least 3 years of experience in youth empowerment/ livelihood/Cash transfer programming related field, particularly in designing and implementing programming in market related business skills, agriculture, livestock, small business development and/or cash programming in development and humanitarian context
  • Experience in leading the creation and implementation of a strategy, demonstrating the ability to identify and prioritise the necessary steps towards an ambitious goal.
  • Experience in designing and writing proposals, monitoring and evaluating development programmes that build resilience to climate shocks with a focus on children.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to motivate, influence and negotiate both internally and externally – including in English.
  • Strong results orientation, with the ability to challenge existing mind sets.
  • Excellent analytical skills especially on social aspects and impact of climate change on children
  • Experience of building networks, resulting in securing significant new partnership and funding opportunities for the organisation.
  • Sound understanding of major issues in Uganda related to the climate emergency, nexus agenda between humanitarian and development - and a close focus on evidence-based approaches, and action learning/adaptation of programming.
  • Experience building, leading and developing colleagues and staff with different backgrounds and expertise.
  • Demonstrated training and technical advisory skills; seasoned in capacity-building
  • Technical competencies in livelihoods and cash/income generation programming
  • Ability to lead on market assessments
  • Strong understanding of gender dynamics within Cash and livelihoods programming and an ability to coordinate with gender experts, advise on and develop strategic initiatives to ensure gender transformative programming in Youth Empowerment and Livelihoods programming
  • Advanced computer skills such as excel, power point and other analysis tools.
  • Commitment to Save the Children values – including gender equality and focusing on the most marginalised and deprived.
  • Strong child rights programming and commitment to rights-based approaches, environmental justice and sustainability, ecosystem-based approaches, gender equality, inclusion, and community-centred development.
  • Experience of working within a complex and matrix organisation structure.
  • Excellent training, facilitation, and team building skills.
