Tembo Steels (U) Ltd is a leading manufacturer of quality steel products in Uganda (East Africa). Our office is situated at crane chambers, 8th floor, Kampala with production plants in Lugazi and Iganga.

 

Job Summary:   Tembo Steels is looking for a skilled and dedicated Gas Plant Operator to join our team at us plant in Lugazi. This role is crucial in ensuring the efficient and safe operation of our Oxygen and Nitrogen production facility. The successful candidate will be responsible for monitoring and controlling plant systems, conducting regular checks and maintenance, and ensuring high production standards of gases required for various industrial processes at Tembo Steels.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities: 

Plant Operation and Monitoring:

  • Operate and monitor the air separation unit (ASU) and related equipment for the production of oxygen and nitrogen.
  • Adjust operating parameters such as temperature, pressure, and flow rates maintain optimal production levels.
  • Ensure production meets quality standards, including gas purity and flow consistency for TemboSteels’ manufacturing processes.

Maintenance and Troubleshooting:

  • Conduct daily inspections of equipment such as compressors, chillers, cryogenic distillation columns, and other critical plant machinery.
  • Diagnose and troubleshoot operational issues in collaboration with the maintenance team.
  • Assist in performing routine maintenance tasks and managing plant shutdowns for repairs and servicing.

Safety and Compliance:

  • Adhere TemboSteels’ safety protocols and standard operating procedures maintain a safe working environment.
  • Follow all environmental guidelines, ensuring proper emissions control, waste disposal, and plant hygiene.
  • Respond emergency situations promptly and effectively, minimizing downtime and damage equipment.

Quality Control:

  • Perform regular quality checks and gas sampling ensure the oxygen and nitrogen meet required purity standards.
  • Document and report gas production data, including purity levels, output volumes, and any deviations from expected parameters.
  • Ensure proper calibration of instruments and devices used in monitoring gas quality.

Operational Support:

  • Assist with plant start-ups, shutdowns, and emergency response operations as required.
  • Collaborate closely with the operations team and other departments maintain continuous plant performance.
  • Maintain accurate and timely records of operational activities, including gas production and maintenance logs.

Documentation and Reporting:

  • Complete detailed shift reports, documenting operational activities, plant status, any incidents, and actions taken.
  • Provide daily and weekly production reports the Plant Supervisor/Operations Manager.
  • Maintain operational logs for compliance and audit purposes.
Qualifications, Skills and Experience:
  • Minimum of a Certificate or Diploma in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or a related technical field.
  • Additional training or certifications in Gas Plant Operations or Industrial Plant Management is a plus.

Work Experience:

  • At least 2 years of experience in operating industrial gas plants, particularly oxygen and nitrogen production systems.
  • Experience in cryogenic systems, compressors, and gas separation technologies is highly desirable.

Skills and Competencies:

  • Sound understanding of industrial gas production processes and plant operations.
  • Strong problem-solving and troubleshooting abilities in mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work effectively in a team.
  • Knowledge of workplace safety practices and environmental regulations.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple tasks under pressure.

  • Ability to adapt to changing work environments and schedules.
  • Strong organizational skills and the ability to document and report information clearly.
