JOB DETAILS:
The University Council of Makerere University invites applications from suitably qualified individuals for the position of First Deputy Vice-Chancellor. Makerere University is the oldest and largest public university in Uganda, established in 1922. The University seeks to fill the position of First Deputy Vice-Chancellor to support the Vice-Chancellor in the academic, administrative, and financial leadership of the University.
1. ROLE
The First Deputy Vice-Chancellor will:
- Deputize for the Vice-Chancellor and act in their absence.
- Oversee academic affairs, including teaching, learning, research, and innovation.
- Coordinate the development and implementation of academic policies and programs.
- Promote academic excellence and ensure quality assurance in academic programs.
- Represent the University in national and international academic forums.
- Perform any other duties as assigned by the Vice-Chancellor or University Council.
2. PURPOSE OF THE JOB
To provide leadership and coordination of academic affairs, research, and innovation, ensuring the University maintains its position as a leading institution of higher learning in Uganda and beyond.
3. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The First Deputy Vice-Chancellor shall:
- Oversee the development and implementation of academic programs.
- Coordinate research, innovation, and knowledge transfer partnerships.
- Ensure quality assurance in teaching, learning, and research.
- Supervise academic staff and ensure their professional development.
- Promote collaboration with national and international academic institutions.
- Oversee the development of academic policies and regulations.
- Represent the Vice-Chancellor in academic and administrative matters as delegated.
- Contribute to the overall strategic planning and development of the University.
4. PERSON SPECIFICATION
- Must hold a PhD or equivalent degree from a recognized institution.
- Must be at least at the rank of Associate Professor in a reputable institution.
- Must have at least 10 years of academic and managerial experience, 5 of which should be at a senior management level in a university or equivalent institution.
- Must have a proven track record of research and publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Must demonstrate strong leadership, managerial, and interpersonal skills.
- Must have experience in strategic planning, financial management, and resource mobilization.
- Must have a good understanding of higher education policies and governance.
- Must be a person of high integrity, with no record of ethical violations.
5. SKILLS AND COMPETENCIES
- Strong leadership and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to manage and resolve conflicts effectively.
- Strategic thinking and planning skills.
- Financial management and resource mobilization skills.
- Ability to work collaboratively with diverse stakeholders.
- Proficiency in ICT and its application in academic management.
