Background:

The IMPACT project is a five-year initiative (2024—2029) implemented by the Jane Goodall Institute—Uganda with support from the Austrian Ministry for Climate Action. The project aims to build the resilience of communities and ecosystems in Uganda’s River Nkusi Catchment area to the effects of climate change.

As part of the project’s livelihood diversification and agroforestry strategy, three climate- resilient and gender-responsive enterprises have been prioritized: apiary, coffee, and cocoa. These were selected based on findings from the Nkusi Catchment Management Plan and a rapid appraisal by the project team. They are intended to reinforce agroforestry systems and enhance socioeconomic stability while contributing to climate adaptation.

The project seeks a consultant to conduct a detailed Value Chain Analysis (VCA) for each of the three enterprises to inform intervention design and implementation.

Objectives of the Assignment

The main objectives of the consultancy are to:

  • Conduct a comprehensive value chain analysis for each of the three selected enterprises: apiary, coffee, and cocoa.
  • Identify opportunities and constraints at each stage of the value chain.
  • Assess the gender and climate resilience dimensions of each value chain.
  • Provide actionable recommendations to enhance value chain performance, sustainability, and inclusivity.
  • Facilitate a validation workshop with stakeholders to present and discuss findings.
  • Produce a detailed report for each enterprise, including value chain maps, SWOT analysis, and recommendations.

 

Scope of Work

The consultant will:

  • Review relevant documents including the Nkusi Catchment Management Plan and IMPACT project proposal.
  • Benchmark existing value chain analyses already conducted at the national level by relevant government agencies (e.g., MAAIF, NAADS, UCDA, NARO), development partners, or sector associations, and contextualize them to the River Nkusi Catchment project area.
  • Develop and submit an inception report with detailed methodology and work plan.
  • Conduct field data collection using appropriate survey techniques.
  • Analyse the value chains for each enterprise, covering input supply, production, processing, marketing, and support services.
  • Evaluate the economic viability, social inclusiveness (with emphasis on gender equity), and climate resilience of each value chain.
  • Prepare draft reports and facilitate a stakeholder validation workshop.
  • Finalize and submit three detailed value chain analysis reports (one per enterprise).

 

Deliverables

    • Inception Report — including methodology, tools, sampling strategy, and work plan.
    • Validated Data Collection Tools — both qualitative and quantitative.
    • Draft Baseline Report — with raw and analysed data.
    • Validation Workshop Presentation — to share preliminaryfindings with stakeholders.
    • Final Baseline Report — incoporatingfeedback and aligned with the project logframe structure.

Duration

The assignment is expected to be completed within 28 calendar days from the start date.

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:  

The consultant (individual or firm) should have:

  • Advanced degree in Agribusiness, Agricultural Economics, Rural Development, or a related field.
  • At least 7 years of experience in value chain development or analysis.
  • Proven experience in analysing climate-smart and gender-inclusive enterprise models.
  • Familiarity with Uganda’s agricultural and agroforestry context.
  • Strong communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Excellent analytical and report writing skills.
