Overview:

The Chief Engineer - Marine oversees the technical and operational aspects of URC’s marine services, ensuring the reliability, safety, and efficiency of vessels used for passenger and goods transport across water bodies, such as Lake Victoria.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Vessel Maintenance and Operations: Oversee the maintenance, repair, and operation of marine vessels, ensuring they meet safety and operational standards.
  • Technical Supervision: Lead a team of marine engineers and technicians, providing technical guidance on engine maintenance, navigation systems, and vessel upgrades.
  • Project Management: Manage marine infrastructure projects, such as port development, dock construction, and vessel procurement, ensuring timely and cost-effective delivery.
  • Safety and Compliance: Ensure all marine operations comply with international maritime standards (e.g., SOLAS) and Ugandan regulations, including safety drills and certifications.
  • Budgeting and Procurement: Prepare budgets for marine operations, oversee procurement of spare parts and equipment, and manage vendor relationships.
  • Emergency Response: Develop and implement emergency response plans for marine incidents, such as oil spills, vessel breakdowns, or passenger evacuations.
  • Innovation and Efficiency: Introduce modern technologies and practices to improve fuel efficiency, reduce emissions, and enhance the reliability of marine services.

Person Specifications:

  • Educational Qualifications: A Bachelor’s degree in Marine Engineering, Naval Architecture, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. A Master’s degree in a relevant discipline is an advantage.
  • Professional Certification: Certification as a Chief Engineer (Class 1 or equivalent) from a recognized maritime authority.
  • Experience: At least 7-10 years of experience in marine engineering, with at least 3-5 years in a leadership role, preferably in a commercial or public marine transport setting.
  • Skills: Expertise in marine vessel operations, strong project management skills, and knowledge of maritime safety regulations. Proficiency in technical software (e.g., CAD) is a plus.
  • Behavioral Competencies: Leadership, problem-solving, adaptability, and the ability to work in high-pressure environments, such as during emergencies.
