About The Role

The Area Manager is a key member of the MED-EL sales team. You will develop business strategies that align with the MED-EL mission, goals, and selling philosophy while meeting area and individual sales goals. The Area Manager manages a team of clinical and surgical account managers while creating and maintaining customer relationships, participating in business planning, and providing expert surgical support to key customers in the assigned area. This position reports to the Regional Director and requires extensive travel.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Manage defined area team (CAM’s & SAM’s) to deliver sales goals and maintain budgetary allowances.

Sales and Customer Relationship Management

  • Develop valuable relationships with key surgeons and audiologists in area.
  • Responsible for key account relationships with surgeons, all levels of hospital and medical center professionals, and other professionals providing services to candidates for and recipients of MED-EL hearing solutions.
  • Possess professional engagement skills, demonstrate products and services effectively and ask for appropriate commitments with integrity.
  • Participate in the development of new business which results in sales growth.
  • Identify the key elements in hearing device purchasing decision processes with assigned and area accounts to intimately know the key decision-making components.
  • Under the guidance of the Regional Director support the MED-EL Finance and Reimbursement departments to improve the financial performance of the area.
  • Maintain necessary vendor relationship credentials.
  • Remain current on and abide by relevant state laws and center-specific vendor relationships policies with Health Care Providers. Identify, acquire and supply most current policies to Risk Management department for addition to server databases.

Account Management

  • Contribute to the collection and entering of accurate and comprehensive Account and Contact information in the company Customer Relationship Management (CRM) database. This includes maintaining relationship connections, market share data, center visit reports and other data as requested by the CEO, VP of Sales and Regional Director.
  • Create business plans regularly monitoring sales goals for area and individual territories within.
  • Practice skill and understanding of the operations of all facilities in which surgical procedures are performed.
  • With the assistance and support of the Regional Director, participate in the management of the negotiation of purchase agreements with individual and group accounts.
  • Learn and retain relevant national pricing trends and competitive price points and discounting habits.
  • Utilize current corporate Purchase Agreement templates when submitting MED-EL Agreement terms.

Topic Expertise

  • Participate in all trainings as determined by Education and Regional Director.
  • Demonstrate expertise on the anatomy, etiology, indications, and contraindications for all MED-EL products used to treat ear conditions. Stay current on developments in technology and relevant surgical approaches.
  • Demonstrate varying surgical approaches, the surgical differences between competing devices, and be viewed as a topic expert on the relationship of device implants and their surgical application.
  • Dedicate time to account activity in the operating room with surgeons as an expert resource for current and emerging technology.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the causes and types of hearing loss, audiologic and otologic evaluation techniques and general treatment options.
  • Demonstrate competency in the anatomy, etiology of disease, indications and contraindications for cochlear implant and middle-ear surgery.
  • Demonstrate competency on all surgical approaches for hearing implants and have a strong working knowledge of the surgical differences between competing devices.
  • Demonstrate competency in operating MED-EL equipment and software for performing intraoperative implant electrical evaluation and basic Auditory Response Telemetry.
  • Obtain training and demonstrate competency, when requested, in supporting complex hearing implant cases, i.e., unusual anatomy and revisions.

Position Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree or greater in an area supportive to surgical support to Otologists, Neurotologists, Operating Room staff, etc. -OR-
  • Bachelor’s degree or greater preferred in an area related to hearing disorders, hearing health care, or audiology.
  • Relevant work experience including team leadership or people management roles.
  • Possess strong written and oral communications skills
  • Demonstrate IT (computer, internet, smart phone, etc.) literacy required to function professionally and competently.
  • Demonstrate a positive team attitude, assisting and supporting other MED-EL team members by identifying opportunities for improving service delivery and participating in the implementation of solutions.
  • Exhibit courteous and professional behavior during interactions with consumer and professional members or the public-at-large while representing MED-EL Corporation.
  • Regulatory responsibilities: Staying current on company policies and procedures, documenting complaints, following up on complaints, etc.
  • Education and Training responsibilities: Staying current on technical and sales delivery training in workshop, web-based and company online learning module environments.
  • Frequent travel in area (greater than 50%). Occasional travel outside area for conferences
    • Co-travel with Clinical Account Managers and Surgical Account Managers
    • Scheduling key account visits, conferences and meetings attendance
    • Making own travel arrangements
    • Coordinating travel with teammates and MED-EL leadership
  • Located within - or willing to relocate to – Western US
