Job Summary: The Resident Anesthesiologist is responsible for providing specialist anesthesia, perioperative medicine, critical care, resuscitation, and emergency airway management services while ensuring the safe, efficient, and evidence-based delivery of care across the Operating Theatre, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU), Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), and Emergency Department.

The role provides clinical leadership in perioperative patient optimization, advanced life support, mechanical ventilation, hemodynamic management, pain medicine, trauma resuscitation, and multidisciplinary critical care management. The Resident Anesthesiologist plays a central role in promoting patient safety, reducing perioperative morbidity and mortality, improving theatre efficiency, and strengthening clinical governance through quality improvement, audit, teaching, and evidence-based practice.

 

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

  • The Resident Anesthesiologist is responsible for providing specialist anesthesia, perioperative medicine, critical care, resuscitation, and emergency airway management services while ensuring the safe, efficient, and evidence-based delivery of care across the Operating Theatre, Intensive Care Unit (ICU), High Dependency Unit (HDU), Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU), and Emergency Department.

  • Deliver Safe Anaesthesia Care
  • Provide high-quality anaesthetic care throughout the perioperative continuum, ensuring patient safety before, during, and after surgery.
  • Lead Critical Care Services
  • Provide specialist management for critically ill patients requiring advanced organ support and multidisciplinary intensive care.
  • Support Emergency Medicine
  • Provide immediate specialist intervention for emergency airway management, trauma resuscitation, cardiac arrest management, and critically ill patients.

Improve Theatre Performance

  • Work collaboratively with theatre teams to improve theatre utilization, reduce delays, minimize cancellations, and enhance patient flow.

Strengthen Clinical Governance

  • Lead clinical audits, mortality reviews, incident investigations, Root Cause Analysis (RCA), Morbidity and Mortality reviews, development of clinical guidelines, and implementation of corrective actions.
  • Build Clinical Capacity
  • Provide mentorship, supervision, teaching, simulation training, and continuing medical education to doctors, nurses, and allied health professionals.
  • Support Organizational Growth
  • Contribute to the development of sustainable perioperative, emergency, and critical care services that improve patient outcomes and organizational performance.

 

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB or equivalent) from a recognized university.
  • Master of Medicine (MMed) in Anesthesiology or equivalent specialist qualification recognized by the Uganda Medical and Dental Practitioners Council.
  • Successful completion of an accredited specialist residency program.
  • Minimum 2 years post-specialization experience preferred.
  • Current ACLS, ATLS/PALS desirable.
  • Fellowship in Critical Care desirable.
  • Experience in ICU, HDU, trauma and obstetric anaesthesia.
