Gordon’s Agricultural Organization-Uganda (GAO-UG) Limited is a youth-led enterprise established in 2020, focused on empowering smallholder farmers in the Lango Sub-region, specifically in Alebtong and Lira Districts. Through a market systems approach, we provide a comprehensive suite of products and services designed to address agricultural challenges. These include improved seeds, agrochemicals, solar water pumps, technical advisory services, microfinance credit, and market linkages. Our goal is to increase productivity, enhance food security, foster market access, and create sustainable job opportunities for youth, women, and people with disabilities in the region.

Position Summary.

We are seeking two experienced Agronomist Officers to join our team and play a key role in enhancing agricultural productivity and improving the livelihoods of smallholder farmers in the Lango Sub-region. The ideal candidates will be responsible for providing expert agronomic advice, supporting the delivery of bundled agricultural products and services, and leveraging technology to improve productivity and profitability for farmers.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Agronomic Support and Advisory

  • Provide technical agronomic support and advice to smallholder farmers on crop management, pest control, disease management, and soil fertility improvement.
  • Train farmers on best agricultural practices, with a focus on sustainable methods, improved seed varieties, and climate-smart agriculture.
  • Support the implementation of agronomy programs related to oilseed, sunflower, and other crop production.

2. Technology Integration

  • Assist in the deployment of digital tools and platforms designed to enhance service delivery to farmers, including mobile-based advisory services and digital marketplaces.
  • Promote the use of technology to improve farm productivity, profitability, and market access for farmers.

3. Farmer Training and Capacity Building

  • Conduct training sessions for farmers and Community Agricultural Promoters (CAPs) to improve their technical skills and knowledge in modern farming practices.
  • Support CAPs and Digital Connectors in delivering digital and face-to-face extension services to farmers.

4. Monitoring and Evaluation

  • Regularly monitor and assess crop performance, farmer engagement, and the impact of the agricultural products and services delivered.
  • Collect data on crop yields, input use, and other agricultural indicators to improve service delivery and inform future programming.

5. Collaboration and Partnerships

  • Work closely with project partners, including input suppliers, financial institutions, and market linkages, to ensure effective service delivery to farmers.
  • Collaborate with local agricultural stakeholders, government agencies, and knowledge institutions to promote best practices and knowledge sharing.

Qualifications and Requirements:

Education:

  • A minimum of a Diploma in Crop Production or Agriculture. A Bachelor’s degree in Agronomy, Agriculture, Agricultural Education and Extension, or a related field and has a valid motorcycle riding permit will be an added advantage.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 1-3 years of professional experience in agronomy, agricultural advisory services, or a similar role, preferably in a rural or smallholder farmer context.
  • Experience in delivering agricultural training and capacity-building programs.
  • Familiarity with the use of mobile-based agricultural solutions, digital platforms, or agricultural technologies is highly desirable.

Skills:

  • Strong agronomic knowledge, particularly in crop management, soil health, pest control, and farm inputs.
  • Experience working with smallholder farmers, youth, and women in rural agricultural settings.
  • Excellent communication skills, both in person and through digital platforms.
  • Ability to work independently, manage time effectively, and meet deadlines.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and basic digital tools.

  • Ability to work in a rural, fast-paced environment and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
