REPORTS TO: Head Agronomy & Advisory

Job Summary

The Agronomist works closely with the Head agronomy and advisory to support the GPL Agronomy and Advisory team. He or she has strong theoretical and practical field skills and must have appreciation of inter-disciplinary work, and a core commitment to achieving science-led agribusiness and agricultural development.

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Contextualize research across multiple spatial and temporal scales while incorporating knowledge of contemporary and future drivers of change
• Work closely with an interdisciplinary team of Agronomists to understand adoption processes, crop production technology targeting, and the enabling environment to support sustainable intensification at scale
• Interaction with multiple stakeholders in the public – private sector and agribusiness that are involved in achieving agronomy outcomes.
• Contribute to resource mobilization through ideas development and relationship management
• Communicate key messages to farmers, agro dealers and extension staff
• Develop technical content for training materials relevant to different fertilizer blend products
• Conduct technical support visits to Farmers, and agro dealers
• Work with host farmers, extension staff and agro dealers to establish demonstration plots
• Conduct regular field checks
• Conduct farmer, extension staff and agro dealer trainings
• Coordinate with the Research to establish fertilizer trial plots
• Advising on management of harvestings to ensure quality produce
• Communicating and demonstrating good agricultural practices
• Coordinate and organize farmer field days in collaboration with the farmers, agro-dealers and extension staff
• Generate and maintain comprehensive database on clients’ queries and responses i.e. frequently asked questions
• Develop plans for testing products on commercial and small-holder farms
• Prepare, submit and keep records of weekly, monthly, quarterly and annual reports on all technical agronomy operations and activities

Qualifications, Skills and Experience:

• The ideal candidate must possess a Bachelor’s Degree in Agriculture majoring in Crop Science, Soil science, Agriculture extension, rural innovations systems or related fields, with at least 3 years work experience in the Agro input sector, working with small holder, commercial to be and large-scale farmers as well as networking with researchers and other relevant actors.
• The ideal candidate should have theoretical knowledge of agricultural crop production with a mix of practical field skills, quantitative abilities, appreciation of inter-disciplinary work, and a core commitment to achieving science-led agricultural development. He or she must also have knowledge on problem-solving orientation and ability to approach work with a clear focus on issues of scale, sustainability, and underlying processes.
• The ideal candidate should possess skills in addressing market aspects of agriculture with successful development interventions and also development of budget plans.
• The ideal candidate must demonstrate good communication and problem-solving skills. He or she must be a team player, dynamic and self-motivated.
Special Demands of the Job
The ideal candidate shall be expected to travel extensively throughout the country.
