Description

Project overviewFarm Radio International is currently accepting proposals for the development of a written guide relating to business development for radio stations.
2. Farm Radio's network
Farm Radio International is a Canadian organization that has been working since 1979 to harness the power of radio to meet the needs of small- scale farmers and rural communities. We work with more than 1,400 radio partners from 38 African countries to fight poverty and food insecurity. With the benefit of FRI resources and training, our radio partners deliver practical, relevant, and timely information to tens of millions of rural Africans. We also work with a range of funding partners to implement radio projects that address specific development challenges and community needs delivering results for farmers and other rural citizens.
About half of our radio partners are community radio stations, many of whom struggle to attract funding to sustain their operations, particularly for rural development programs, addressing food security, climate change, agriculture, nutrition, and women and youth issues. We produce a variety of training materials and learning opportunities for our radio partners, including webinars, online discussions, learning modules, online workshops, and written Broadcaster how- to guides. Our guides can be found here: https://training.farmradio.fm/
3. Goals and target audience
The written guide should be aimed at managers working at radio stations in Africa, but can also be relevant to other media (print, broadcast, etc). It can focus on one or multiple practical strategies for business development and marketing to help radio stations attract the funds necessary to be sustainable.
We know that funding is often a limitation for radio stations and other media, particularly working in rural contexts. To this end, Farm Radio has previously published two Broadcaster how- to guides:
How to generate revenue to support a regular farmer program- How radio stations can prepare a funding proposal to submit to a donor
===== Page 2 =====
We also have a guide for individual journalists related to written award or grant applications.
These documents can guide you in the length, format, and scope expected.
4. Scope of work
By the end of the consultant's engagement, we would like to receive a written document of about 3,000 words (in English). The consultant will also participate in an online webinar (90 minutes) with our radio partners, providing tips on the topic (in English and / or Swahili).
5. Timeline
The guide should be finalized by September 30, 2026. The webinar may take place earlier or later.
6. Technical requirements
The consultant should have experience and relevant education in marketing or business development. Past experience working at or training radio stations is considered an asset.
7. Guidelines for submissions
Please submit a short proposal including the topic(s) you would address in the guide, as well as budget required. We hope to receive your proposal by July 30, 2026. Proposals can be sent to kbunham@farmradio.org
