JOB DETAILS:

The role is responsible for driving DRC vehicles, picking up and delivering people, goods, and any documents of DRC safely and efficiently to their destination, in line with DRC’s policies and procedures. The driver may as well be called upon as and when required to support emergency response teams in cases of humanitarian crisis.

Your main duties and responsibilities will be:

  • Follow travel instructions and observe all traffic regulations/ laws in place, where needed, advise on the possible breach of traffic regulations/ laws in line with DRC policy and guidelines.
  • Ensure that the road license and vehicle insurance are valid and renewed on time in line with national traffic regulations and fleet management guidelines.
  • Ensure that the vehicle is mechanically attended to and is properly checked for oil, water, fan belt tension, brake fluid, levels, etc, before leaving for the trip, including recommendations (to management) for vehicle service in line with the fleet management guidelines.
  • Ensure accountability for any cargo or other kind of material loaded on the vehicle for transportation to the next destination. This shall involve preloading inspection and verification against the waybill, as well as doing the same on arrival at the planned destination.
  • Maintain the vehicle(s) in a clean and sound mechanical condition and always ensure their safety in line with established Policy and guidelines.
  • Maintain an up-to-date mileage vehicle log sheet and submit to the supervisor every month in line with the fleet management guidelines. In addition, submit monthly vehicle log sheet reports every month.
  • Ensure that the vehicle’s safety and recovery tools and accessories, including the spare wheel, jack, wheel spanner, first aid kit, fire extinguisher, warning triangle, among others, are always kept in the vehicle and in good condition.
  • Report any damage/accidents to the vehicle or defects arising at the earliest possible time to the supervisor (Supply Chain Officer/Manager/Area Manager) as required by the fleet management guidelines and in line with the traffic regulations.
  • Cooperate and be of assistance to staff and visitors, e.g., troubleshooting potential problems during daily business.
  • Conduct himself/herself both professionally and personally in such a manner as to bring credit to the organization and not to jeopardize its humanitarian mission.

About you

To be successful in this role, we expect you to have a valid driving license with Class B and D1 held for at least 3 years. Moreover, we also expect the following:

Required

  • A minimum of Uganda Certificate of Education (UCE)/Ordinary level certificate.
    • Minimum of 5 years' working experience as a driver, preferably in an International NGO (INGO) setting.
    • Ability to speak, read, and write English.
    • Computer literacy in Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
    • An individual with a strong work ethic who requires minimal direction.
    • An individual who works well independently as well as part of a team and thrives in a fast-paced environment.
    • Good coordination and collaboration skills.
    • Knowledge of routes, duty stations, and project areas in the INGO and diplomatic community.
    • Good interpersonal and communication skills.
    • Cultural sensitivity and ability to work in a cross-cultural environment.
    • Experience working with Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems is an added advantage.
    • A defensive driving training certificate is desirable.
    • A certificate in automotive mechanics is an added advantage.
