We identify high potential ambitious entrepreneurs and give them the knowledge, tools, capital, and
networks they need to build the skills and capacity to grow well run businesses that are good for customers, employees, owners, value chain partners, the environment and the local communities where they are based.
These are Good Businesses.
We are currently implementing a range of initiatives under one of our thematic areas, Sustainable Food Systems, to help entrepreneurs build Good Businesses contributing to a sustainable food system in East Africa.
Key Responsibilities of the Investor Engagement Manager
The Investor Engagement Manager will be responsible for the following activities in East Africa:
● Investor Engagement and Community of Practice. The IE Manager will work with TIFS and SHONA
team members to organize key events(see table below) in 2025. The IE manager will also organise panels or participate in other key events, such as the Africa Food System Summit. The IE Manager may also participate in relevant events of investor networks, such as regional meetings of the Council
on Smallholder Agriculture Finance and the Aspen Network for Development Entrepreneurs. This area of work may include acting as a liaison with asset managers who are invited to join a "fund of funds."
Monthly: Virtual planning meetings of the CoP, including Stewards (i.e. a steering committee) meetings.
Quarterly: Virtual meetings of the Investing in AEEs Working Group and the Growing AEEs Working Group, with support from the Stewards (i.e. a steering committee).
TBD Meetings with TIFS, Rockefeller Foundation, and various funder and investor meetings in East Africa
● Financial and impact analytics. As needed, the IE Manager will support investors by applying the
Systemic Investing Assessment (SIA) and Business Agroecology Criteria Tool (B-ACT) to generate relevant insights about investable opportunities. As needed, the IE Manager may support investors with (a review of) due diligence of relevant investments.
o TIFS is working with several asset managers who are using the SIA to strengthen the design of
new investment funds. The Manager will support completion of these assessments and participate in follow-up advisory assignments.
● Financial orchestrator and translator. The IE Manager will engage with businesses and producer organizations to assess financing challenges, articulate and identify opportunities for financing, and identify financial experts needed to co-create new solutions.
o The manager has an immediate opportunity to engage in a TIFS project with multiple partners in Kenya who are working on a financing structure to build diverse markets for agroforestry coffee production in Kenya.
Starting immediately, the manager will support a TIFS project with Metabolic and The Rockefeller Foundation to source regenerative financing projects.
Education / Work experience
● A bachelor's degree in a relevant field, such as finance, economics, or accounting
● Minimum of 3 years of relevant professional experience as an Investment Manager or Business Analyst
● Knowledge of food systems in East Africa
Skills + Capabilities
● Highly numerical and analytical i.e. you are very comfortable with numbers and able to analyze large sets of qualitative and quantitative data
● Highly proficient with excel, MS Word and MS Powerpoint. Proficiency with Power PBI is an added advantage.
● You have experience stepping into ambiguous and disorganized situations and bringing structure.
● You have experience building financial models, cap tables and conducting quantitative and qualitative financial analysis.
● You have experience in developing business plans, building and managing dashboards and analyzing data from diverse sources.
● You have strong communication skills i.e ability to write and present investment memoranda in both written and oral communication
● You have experience working on teams with diverse cultures.
● You are able to quickly build rapport and maintain strong relationships with teams, entrepreneurs, partners and investors
● You are able to coach and support entrepreneurs to finding their own solutions to challenges
● You have the ability to strategically think and interact with management teams to prepare, understand and present analytical reports
● You are able to organize virtual and in-person events for investors
● You are able to advocate for your organization through speaking engagements and presentations at business or investor events
● You are able to multi-task and prioritize, and an ability to get things done independently
● You are able to work effectively and independently in a remote team environment, with a high You are able to display sound and consistent good judgment
