Human Capital Business Solutions Ltd is a Boutique HR Advisory Firm that specializes in strategic HR Consulting, Talent Acquisition & Development, Risk Management and Business Process Outsourced Services with our Headquarters based in Uganda and Country Office in Tanzania.
Our client is a Steel Manufacturing Company based in Jinja, Uganda with a large focus on Steel manufacturing, production and distribution. On behalf of our client we are looking for a competent and experienced Laboratory Assistant to be based in Jinja, Uganda.
Reports To: The Quality Controller
Duty Station: Jinja, Uganda
Job Summary: The Laboratory Assistant is involved in supporting the Quality Controller and production team by performing a variety of tasks to ensure high quality is achieved. H/She will also be involved in assisting with daily quality control operations and line inspections of steel products, maintaining records and putting measures of control to ensure quality is achieved.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
• Check the physical condition of samples received for testing.
• Make samples ready for testing as per the defined test method.
• Conduct sample testing as per the documented test method given in the related Standards.
• Use equipment for testing as referred in the related Standards.
• Ensure that the test methods / Standards for testing are available where testing activities are performed.
• Ensure all required information is adequately filled-up in the Work sheet.
• Obtain the review of the Work sheet from Production Manager including the Work sheet prepared during the shift.
• Keep the equipment for testing in valid calibration conditions.
• Conduct preventive maintenance of the equipment.
• Handle breakdown maintenance of the equipment as soon as possible.
• Position the remaining samples retained for the re-test in the sample preservation area and ensure that the sample is preserved for specified retention period. However, if required, these may store for longer period, on requested by the concern user section.
• Dispose off the samples after retention period and after testing, after receipt of approval from the Production Manager.
• Ensure all records are maintained at all stages of testing and ensuring the validity of results.
• Monitor the environment condition regularly and record the same periodically during the testing activities carried-out.
• Handle the samples throughout the testing and preservation in such a way that the validity of results if not affected.
• Ensure stringent compliant of the ISO/IEC 17025 standard in the Lab.
• Analyze the complaint by reviewing the related records as per the complaint given by the Production Manager.
• Liaise with the Manufacturing Manager on day-to-day functioning/work activities.
• Optimize the available to achieve maximum and high-quality output during the testing and reduce wastage of resources.
Qualifications, Experience, and Skills
• Bachelor's degree or diploma in Industrial Chemistry, Physics, or a related field.
• Understanding of the quality control processes.
• At least 2-3 years post qualification experience in quality control in steel manufacturing companies/environment.
• Ability to use laboratory equipment like spectrometers, hardness testers, tensile machines, and other metallurgical testing tools.
• Strong knowledge of chemical analysis methods for determining the composition of steel alloys.
• Knowledge of data logging and report generation software used in industrial laboratories.
• Ability to follow strict testing procedures and protocols to maintain quality standards.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical skills to interpret data and identify issues in steel production processes.
• Strong understanding of laboratory safety protocols and industrial safety standards.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills for reporting test results to engineers, supervisors, and production teams.
• Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment with production, engineering, and quality control teams.
• Excellent organizational skills to manage multiple tests and ensure samples are processed in a timely manner.
Barriers to Success in Role
• Limited or lack of technical knowledge about quality control processes.
• Inability to follow strict testing procedures and protocols to maintain quality standards.
