JOB DETAILS:
Job Purpose:
To assist the department in responding to and managing disease outbreaks or public health events by overseeing laboratory activities related to sample analysis, diagnostics, and data reporting.
Key Functions:
• Support the coordination of the laboratory pillar in public health response.
• Plan and expedite the processing of samples related to outbreak investigations/public health events. Conduct specialized diagnostic tests to identify and confirm pathogens associated with disease outbreaks.
• Perform assay and equipment validations of all new testing procedures as they are introduced in the laboratory. Implement laboratory-based surveillance mechanisms to monitor the spread of infectious diseases and provide timely reports to support public health decision-making.
• Collect, analyse, and interpret laboratory data to contribute valuable insights into the dynamics of public health events/ outbreaks.
• Prepare comprehensive reports for public health authorities, detailing findings and recommendations. Act as a key laboratory resource in the rapid response to disease outbreaks or public health responses, collaborating closely with public health officials and epidemiologists.
• Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams, including epidemiologists, healthcare professionals, and government agencies, to coordinate outbreak response efforts.
• Communicate laboratory findings and technical information effectively to non-technical stakeholders.
• Participate in the development of national policies and guidelines specific to public health.
• Participate in the training of laboratory staff and healthcare professionals on outbreak response protocols and techniques.
• Contribute to the development and management of standard operating procedures (SOP) for rapid and efficient outbreak management.
• Ensuring annual SOP reviews, archiving, maintaining up-to-date lists and schedules of review, and ensuring that all appropriate personnel have read and signed off on SOPs.
• Implement rigorous quality control measures to ensure the accuracy and reliability of laboratory results during outbreak investigations.
• Participate in external quality assessment programs to enhance laboratory performance.
• Oversee the maintenance, calibration, and inventory management of laboratory equipment and supplies specific to outbreak response,
• Ensure adequate resources are available for timely and effective outbreak management.
Qualifications, Competencies and experience
• Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Bachelor's Degree in Microbiology or a related field. Master's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Microbiology, public health or related field Registered and licensed by the Allied Health Professional Council.
• At least 6 years of working experience one of which in Public Health Emergency.
• Field/practical experience in outbreak and VHFs management.
• Training in sample packaging and transportation. Training in QMS implementation
