Responsibilities

We have an opportunity for a VP, Business Development (Specialty Accident - Business Travel Accident, Participant Accident, Intercollegiate Sports, K-12 schools, colleges and universities ) to join our Berkley Accident and Health team! This position is a direct report of the Chief Growth Officer and will play an integral role in leading our business development efforts. You will be responsible for establishing new broker partnerships, deepening existing ones, and leading the development and execution of our growth strategies for the division. This is a highly collaborative and visible position, with a set of responsibilities all focused on helping us grow. This role includes direct management and mentorship of a 3-person sales team.

This position can be remote anywhere in the U.S. with approximately 80% nationwide travel

Key Functions Include But Are Not Limited To

  • Develop and execute a broker development strategy for the Specialty Accident segment
    • Determine the best broker relationships to develop, and implement strategies and tactics that position Berkley Accident & Health to meet or exceed growth and profit targets
    • Deepen relationships with existing producer and program partners by ensuring that we’re providing excellent service and the product expertise required by the market
    • Develop new producer and program partnerships by leveraging the strength of our existing product portfolio, and by exploring new markets and innovative solutions
    • Establish strong relationships that seek to leverage product and distribution opportunities with other W.R. Berkley companies
    • Collaborate with underwriting, actuarial, and finance to ensure that our growth strategy is well-positioned to generate superior long-term risk-adjusted returns through the market cycle
    • Establish reporting of key performance indicators and growth, profit and efficiency targets
  • Manage the Regional Sales Managers for the Specialty Accident segment
    • Assist the Regional Sales Manager with the development of their territory business expansion efforts
    • Develop goals and establishing performance metrics that assess progress relative to those goals
    • Be in constant communication with your team both electronically and in person
    • Responsible for motivating and advising their sales team to improve their performance, as well as hiring and training new sales representatives
    • Be available to assist rep(s) with difficult and or high value renewal/ new business sales opportunities
  • Align Sales Goals with the overall strategy of the Company
    • Create specific, targeted goals for the team
    • Improving profitability for rep(s) book
    • Generate new sales and develop territories
    • Integrate sales coaching, personal development, and sales training into your team goal
  • Work closely with the marketing function to establish successful support, channel and partner programs
  • Work closely with sales leadership team members across Berkley A&H’s product portfolio to ensure coordination and synergy in existing relationships
  • Manage multiple priorities and meet client and company deadlines; building on strong organization, planning, and execution skillsets

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years of relevant Accident and Health (A&H) experience in business development, underwriting, or other growth-oriented roles focused on the Business Travel Accident (BTA) and Participant Accident markets
  • Excellent communication and negotiation skills with internal and external customers
  • Demonstrated ability in all aspects of sales leadership with a track record of successfully growing or building a book of business
  • Business and technical acumen with an ability to apply technical expertise, special knowledge, maturity and judgment to business issues
  • Strong ethical standards while leading with character, integrity and courage, even in difficult situations
  • Strong organizational, planning, and time management skills
  • Proficient at applying new ways of thinking and specific techniques to a variety of business situations while encouraging that innovative mindset
  • Ability to travel extensively throughout the U.S. - approx. 80%

  • Base Salary Range: $135,000 – $150,000
